Re: Where's Achilles when you need him? Capitalism, denigrated by Socialism
Yeah. Pretty much. The conclusion they want me to get to is that capitalism is the lesser of the two evils, since socialism has restrictions on economic freedom which is the reason why all the "socialists" states fail. Like Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela. (Ignoring the fact those countri...

Re: Where's Achilles when you need him? Capitalism, denigrated by Socialism
The problem with both capitalism and socialism is that in their purest form they both fall foul of the weakness of the human condition - greed, sloth, envy and so on. Unless you can theorise the human element out of them they would both be doomed to fail. So every country that has anything approachi...

Re: How honest should you be?
I'm sure this is just one of those things where tone is everything and you can't read tone in a written form... but "just get to the point" sounds way ruder than "yes, I'm busy at the moment." In writing it does. Hey - if you were saying it in German, it'll sound aggressive anyw...

Re: How honest should you be?
There's a big difference between "being honest about everything" and "being honest about everything and voicing those honest opinions even when there's no particular reason to". You can adopt a philosophy of being honest without going out of your way to be a be a complete douche...

It sounds like you're getting older! I'm reminded of the Churchill quote:
Anyone who isn't a liberal by age twenty has no heart. Anyone who isn't a conservative by age forty has no brain.

Re: Countries visited map
I think if you want "bragging rights" about travelling and you decide to use this sort of device as a way of showing it, then you really want to pick your destinations based purely on the size of the country... You could spend a year doing a tour of all the island/city states of the world ...

Re: Freedom of Speech doesn't exist
Two points - one quick and one slower... The quick one is that you talk about Freedom of Speech in "the West" and the right to use that to spread hatred and bigotry. That's not accurate. Many European countries would describe themselves as being in favour of Freedom of Speech, but they hav...

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire
I don't find the cartoons shown from Charlie Hebdo to be particularly funny - they're fairly "low-brow" stuff just trying to have a swipe at what they perceive to be an easy target - but if they'd done similar style cartoons about Christianity no-one would have batted an eyelid. So it come...
