Re: Shooting in Paris

There are few incidents in which violence as retaliation resulted in change. Violence typically results in the exact opposite. People shore up their beliefs and strap their helmets on tighter for the fight ahead. Too true. But then, how do we dissolve prejudices and change people in a positive way?...

Re: Shooting in Paris

Certainly plausible.

Someone more inclined toward conspiracy theories than myself might also suggest that it was staged by the government as a means of justifying intensified hatred toward and oppression of Muslims.

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire

I cannot imagine it being an acceptable thing to do to in the 1960s to stand by the racist publications of newspapers that were protested against by blacks (even if the protest was violent) in places like New York City and Oakland. Hell to the fucking no. The retaliation to hate speech is something ...

Re: Shooting in Paris

And do you know why that is? Because Muslims jeopardize the very foundation on which the United Corporations of America is built on. And so those corporations throw millions of dollars into tools that encourage society to view Muslims as the enemy instead of who the real enemy is. Blacks nor Jews n...

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire

^ That's what I was getting at when I said the girl couldn't expect consequences for drinking. It's because she's not doing any real harm in drinking. But, yes, Hedbo is doing directly harming things.

Re: Shooting in Paris

But when it comes to Muslims it's more accepted? How is one hate speech and the other satire? Obviously I do believe both are hate speech, and what Charlie Hebdo did was hate speech. But I don't understand how people are more willing to condemn one and laugh at the other when it's practically the s...

Re: 2015 MLB Hall of Fame Votes

I can't go that far. Clemens and Bonds showed radical gains in size very abruptly. Johnson and Martinez stayed really thin and never really added a lot of power.

Every player found out to have juiced should be immediately banned for life and all accolades stripped and burned.

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire

The cartoon Sikax most recently posted with the bullets going through the building and hitting the mosque suggests that Islamophobia and harm to Muslims is caused by these terrorists actions. No, harm to Muslims is caused by racism and Western Imperialism. That's the reason I said it was poignant. ...

Re: Shooting in Paris

Yeah, I can't get behind Derived in the sense that speech should not be totally free. That's fine. But that doesn't mean someone doesn't also have the right to get super pissed about it. Murder? No, still not condoning it, but perhaps murder is just a degree of anger that those people felt could be ...

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire

The drunk/rape analogy is tricky. The girl just wants to drink and get drunk. She might be with friends. She might not even have registered that there could be dangerous guys around when she started drinking. Charlie Hedbo knew full well that certain Muslims would be and have been offended and have ...

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire

Killing people for publishing cartoons because those cartoons offend certain religious sensibilities is "the problem" here. I've found the best way to solve a problem is to start as far back as I can go--to find its roots, so to speak. If we both identify the problem here as violence agai...

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire

Yes, and you'll notice I haven't condoned violence against the artists or the newspaper, but this is propaganda and that's what Boomer asked.

(Also, not sure Jerry Falwell is quite to Christianity what Muhammed is to Islam, but that's not the point.)

Re: Another terrorist attack (likely) motivated by Western satire

It's one thing that Islam conflicts with Western values and it's another for a Western newspaper to deliberately satirize Islam to the point of egregious insult. I'm not sure what you're trying to convey here—that Charlie Hebdo should not be in the business of offensive satire? I think what Sikax m...
