Doctor Who, Season 9, episode 1

Post by CashRules »

Decent, not great. The Daleks are overplayed so hopefully this will be their only appearance this year. Well, it's a two-parter so they'll be back next week. I've heard this entire season will be two-parters but I'm not sure if it's true or not. But yeah; the Daleks with Davros are always better than the Daleks without Davros. Plus we had the first appearance of the Ood, although briefly, since Tennant's run. Then there's the Master (Missy) making her grand return. In addition we get the Sisterhood of Karn that made their only previous New Who appearance in the Paul McGann mini-episode "Night of The Doctor". Besides the Ood mthere were a few other nods to the RTD era that might show that Moffat isn't a total prick. Or maybe he's trying to hide being a prick by making a few cameo nods to the RTD era. Capaldi's first actual scene is, um, entertaining. So those of you who are Who fans need to check it out if you haven't seen it already. Those of you who are not Who fans are the type of people who barely qualify as people. I HAVE SPOKEN!

I quite liked it. Capaldi looked to be more at home in the role I think. I really enjoy Missy as a character too. Though that's partly because she's played by the actress who was one of the best parts of Green Wing.

I'm interested in seeing what kind of character Maisie Williams is supposed to play this season. She's supposed to be in two episodes so that probably means she's in a two-parter. Maybe she'll kill Clara. That would be good. She's already been in more episodes than Rose and that ain't right. Clara is definitely supposed to be leaving this season (finally) and there is a rumor that the Doctor who she and Missy found is actually from a few years in their future and he already knows Clara is dead. The fact that he hugged her and acted all odd about her seems to make this a possibility. By the end of this season I may no longer be saying that Eccleston is my favorite Doctor. I agree, Capaldi really seems to be getting comfortable with the role and, although any true fan should have known where they were as soon as Missy realized it was a planet, Capaldi still managed to sell how dangerous it was with his acting. Since I doubt any actor will stay in the role for more than three seasons (well, three seasons and a few specials for Tennant), I'm already wondering who will be next. I'd really like to see Idris Elba in the role but he may be too big a name for a weekly television show.

Yeah, I'm quite happy she's in this, I've only seen her in one thing other than Game of Thrones so far.

Clara already being dead in the doctors timeline would be a nice little storyline.

Smith and Capaldi are tied for my favourite at this point. Then Eccleston. Then if we're being technical about it, McGann's and Hurt's appearances in the modern Doctor Who series go ahead of Tennant.

Elba would be amazing but he's too big for it. I'd like to see Olivia Colman. She can act, she's got comedy chops, she's getting popular. Maybe someone like Rupert Grint as he's been quiet for a while. Or someone like Jason Flemyng.

Some people will go batshit crazy if the Doctor regenerate as a female. There are already enough of them still pissed that the Master is a woman. I just don't see the problem there because, especially in this episode, Michelle Gomez makes evil a lot of fun to watch. According to IMDB they actually considered Catherine Zeta-Jones for the Doctor at one time. She would have been the first Welsh person to play the Doctor. Then again IMDB also says that American pro wrestler Randy Orton was considered and nobody who isn't British should ever play the Doctor. I'd stop watching if an American played it.

There is something seriously wrong when a bunch of adults post more about cartoons than about the greatest sci-fi series ever.

I was trying to remember what I'd seen with Olivia Colman. I just realized it was Broadchurch with Tennant and Arthur Darvill. Boy did she get some bad news in that show. She was also in Smith's first episode of Who as one of the people Prisoner Zero possessed.

She's also in Peep Show, which I think is a pretty great show.

The second episode just put the stamp on it. This is starting off to be the best season yet. The opening scene with Clara and Missy was brilliant. Plus we finally get an explanation for how a Dalek could know the word "mercy" which we first heard one utter right before being killed by River Song in the episode Big Bang at the end of season 5.

I just realized that the guy who played the Targaryen chick's brother in Game of Thrones also played the son in The Family of Blood. He plays weird evil characters quite well. I wonder which is worse, being turned into a scarecrow for eternity or having melted gold poured on your head.

Yeah, I recognised him in GOT when I first saw him, thought it was pretty cool. You see lots of the actors from GoT pop up in British TV to be honest.

I'd rather have the melted gold, eternity is a long time.
