reddit sucks

Post by Anakin McFly »

I posted links to objective, peer-reviewed science articles on a thread about transgender kids and I was downvoted to oblivion, called the stupidest person on reddit and threatened with violence.

Now most of my hard-earned karma is gone and I have to wait 8 minutes between posts.

I'm still baffled that people think parents force their kids to be trans and that it's a form of child abuse from sadistic hippy liberals who hate children and want them to suffer. What motivation could they possibly have? Every single parent of a trans kid I know always fought against it at the start until it became clear that doing so was causing their kid a lot of psychological harm and distress. At that age there's not even any medical intervention. It's just clothes, name, haircut. If the child changes their mind, just switch back, no harm done, and in the meantime they can stop wanting to kill themselves.

thanks, you two.

It's a losing battle, but it's this thread if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comm ... ransition/

I'm probably going to leave it for now because it got depressing quick. (and also because I have to wait 8 minutes between posts). Quantity-wise I've experienced much worse, but a couple of comments really got to me.

I've known via acquaintances various trans kids who transitioned in the single-digit years, and all of them went from extremely depressed to ridiculously happy and well-adjusted. Calling that child abuse insults actual abused children. Those commenters seem to think that parents are dragging their horrified, protesting toddlers to chop off their dicks because of their liberal agenda. Even if they tried that, they wouldn't be allowed to - the minimum age for surgery is 18.

I've had my own family claim that it's my fault my kid is a lesbian. They completely tune me out and chant "Jesus" whenever I try to explain that A) I don't have that kind of control over human biology, and B) The word "fault" has no logical application here. I'm still not sure why I allow them to live.

I never get why people think that heterosexuality is so flimsy that the slightest thing could turn a kid gay, when mass social pressure, abuse, discrimination, jail, electroshock therapy and being threatened with the undying flames of hell all completely fail to turn gay people straight.

I know this won't help much but this is the most cheering gif I got in my arsenal:

I'm really upset with the internet tonight too because someone was trolling the Jezebel comments with horrific gore pictures of dismembered animals and dead infants. They got taken down in the end but it left me shaking and tearful because it was graphic and I was not expecting it. I know that dealing with people who are being shitty about your identity is 100x worse than that so I really hope you feel better soon. Assholes gonna asshole, poppet.

I know this is not anywhere close to the same thing, but I got hundreds of down votes a short while ago for suggesting that it was a bad thing that Madeleine Albright infamously justified helping to murder at least five hundred thousand children on national television. I left extremely depressed and angry at everything and hating everyone.

My attempt at solidarity.

I'm sorry for what you have to go through. This is why we need transhumanism. [none]

what the crap. Nah, I wouldn't say that thread was 100x worse, because spamming pictures like that is an attempt to blatantly dismiss and mock everyone on the site, likely with the hope of triggering someone for the lolz.

puppers though! Thanks. [love10]

I was disturbed with how most arguments in the OP thread required assuming the worst of the other side. Most parents love their kids, or at least try to. Most scientists and doctors do actually know what they're doing. Most pediatricians and child psychologists don't sign up with the intent to permanently screw up as many children as they can to serve some political agenda.

Trans kids only started transitioning pre-puberty at these numbers starting about 5 or 10 years ago, because the years before that were spent intensely researching and studying small groups of test cases to ensure that this was the best outcome for those children. The results overwhelmingly bore that out - which is why puberty blockers and all that are even being approved for use for those who desire them. Most studies showed a 100% satisfaction rate or close to it (one was at about 97%, with the remaining 3% uncontactable). Mental health and suicide rates were at population normal, vs the vastly escalated rates (20 times, etc) for those who transitioned in adulthood. One counter to that is that there is some evidence that not all gender dysphoric adolescents will continue being transgender into adulthood, though the majority of them will. So it then becomes a choice between letting them transition at puberty and have an almost 100% chance at ending up as a happy trans adult, or hold off treatment and have perhaps a 15% possibility of being a happy cis adult or an 85% possibility of an unhappy trans adult - which some might argue is worth the risk, given fertility issues and society being horrible to trans people, and there's still always the option of transitioning in adulthood, though medical intervention then is markedly less effective.

I hate that people automatically dismiss all those years of research and careful screening from people who are just as much if not more concerned about the children and write it off as something parents and doctors do to kids on a whim. Even as an adult I had to get approved by about 7 doctors over a period of months, and they're even more stringent and paranoid when it's kids.

Went through and gave you a few up votes, Anakin. I tried to downvote all the dopes, but damn there were a lot of them.

It sounds like pretty much everyone misinterpreted the article to read as if the 4 year old was actually operated on.

The clip regarding the Iraqi sanctions where she says something like "the price was worth it"?

Yeah, she's an utterly disgusting human being.

Thanks. I know votes shouldn't matter but needing to wait 8 minutes between posts sucks. It's a system that ends up enforcing echo chambers when everyone the majority disagrees with gets quickly silenced. I usually expect downvotes and disagreements when commenting on topics like that, but I didn't expect so many all at once, nor to be unable to fight back because of the posting quota. I'm better now though, and at least the quota is motivation to find better ways to spend my time.

Yeah. Someone even admitted they didn't bother to read the article. The irony is that meanwhile intersex infants are still operated on in many places, because parents want a 'normal' boy or girl, and those are usually the sort of people who think there's nothing wrong with that. It's since been banned in the US, I think.

Yes. And yes, she is.

Hearing that for the first time was my first awakening experience. It helped clue me in to the fact that everyone at the top levels of the American government are deranged sociopaths.
