Sex scenes and nudity

Post by Cassius Clay »

So, I was watching Gone Girl, and there is a scene where Ben Affleck puts a woman's breasts in his mouth. And I was like, whoa.

Seriously, what's the deal with film nudity and sex-simulation. You are really putting a strange woman's breasts in your mouth for the sake of a film? While you've got a wife and kids at home? I wonder how Jennifer Garner feels about that.

I've never been able to wrap my head around how these scenes are supposed to be "professionally shot". There's just so much potential for inappropriateness and exploitation. I just don't understand. Kissing is one thing. That's a form of intimacy that is generally pretty acceptable for actors to perform. And they tend to use film tricks, like not using tongue, but making it look like you are(though I've seen french kissing scenes where tongue is is clearly being used). And you aren't going to get an R rating from a kissing scene. But sucking on a nipple is a whole different level of intimacy. What the hell does professional even mean in that context(I know what it technically means...not being a creep...not lingering/staring...not trying to get your rocks off...following the choreography and being as clinical as possible..etc)? And it occurred to me that, while there are plenty of nude scenes and sex scenes in movies, you don't often seen fondling of breasts/putting breasts in mouths. A lot of kissing and fake humping...but fondling of breasts seems borderline pornographic to me. I know this sounds like I'm a prude, but I'm not at all. I just can't wrap my head around how such a thing could ever be professional in mainstream. I find it difficult to put myself in the actor's shoes. 'Cause I'm watching it and my internal reaction is "that's fucking hot"...so it's hard for me to imagine how a straight man would be "professional" about that. Even with all the planning, the rehearsals/choreography, with a bunch of people in the room...at the end of it, you are still putting a strange woman's intimate parts in your mouth...and that's gotta be very super awkward. Do you just have an out-of-body experience or something(like I did when a stripper made me put one of her breasts in her mouth when I was 18...like, I still question if that really happened)?

I know that porn actors obviously do much more than that, and that there are still professional standards. But, the difference to me is that porn actors tend to be pretty sexually open. Many of them are in open relationships, and are comfortable with their partners sleeping with other people. But, I tend to think of mainstream actors as being more sexually conventional. So, I am just baffled when they shoot these kinds of scenes. How do they do it, and how does their partner feel about it.

And while big, mainstream films tend to be very clinical and "professional" about how they go about shooting such scenes, I've heard horror stories about sex scenes from more low-budget, amateur films. I heard one actress say that a guy once ejaculated on her stomach during a sex scene.[none] Isn't that really disturbing? She just wiped if off and pretended it never happened.

One disturbing thing I've noticed about female nudity in film and tv is the potential exploitation of power. You'll notice that a vast majority of nudity is done by unknown actresses, extras, or actresses still on the rise. You have powerful actresses who seem to love doing nudity(like Kate Winslet), but it seems most of the nudity is done by not so powerful actresses. And, when they became for famous, and are not starving actresses, some choose to stop doing nudity because they have more options available...and can actually fight for no or less nudity in a scene that previously required it. Because when you don't have much power/demand, you know you are easily replaced by someone else willing to do nudity. Daenerys(or whatever her name is) from game of thrones is an example of this. She did nudity in the first season, then in the next season said she would not do it anymore. I find that whole dynamic deeply disturbing. Not to mention the fact that a lot of nudity seems to serve no other purpose but to titillate(no pun intended).

About Gone Girl specifically, Ben doesn't actually put anything in his mouth. She reveals her breasts, he kind of sort of touches one of them, and then his head leans in toward her chest as the camera moves away. So the suckling is implied, I suppose, but not explicit.

As for the general thought, I agree. It's weird. It's always been weird to me. These are two human beings with no emotional ties whatsoever save the few days/weeks they've been filming together, and here they are doing just about everything short of penetration. Just, because. Because they're getting paid to make someone else's art. It's weird. But, people like money. And sex sells. And hot women sell. Liszterine is right.
The agonies which are have their origin in the ecstasies which might have been.

There was a scene in Original Movie where Antonio Banderas bangs Angelina Jolie in a softcore porn kind of way, the thing is I learned that Melanie Griffith was present during the filming. How weird would that be?

That whole scenario makes my head explode considering back in that day, Angelina Jolie was Angelina Jolie, and I don't know if it's weirder that Antonio would be there doing stuff while his wife is watching or having Melanie being there watching Antonio doing stuff to another woman. WEIRD!
