Touching movie scenes

Post by Cassius Clay »

Signs. Kid is having an asthma attack and has no inhaler. It really got to me when I first saw this scene because I had terrible asthma as a kid. And had been in similar situations where I simply couldn't breathe and didn't have my inhaler(or wasn't working), and my mother trying to calm me. It's like drowning in air...just a terrible, panicky feeling.

Swing away scene. When a bunch of normally unrelated behaviors and conditions come together for one purpose/moment....when the otherwise annoying/random/problematic behaviors are revealed to have a broader meaning. The little girls annoying habit of leaving glasses of water around the house, the baseball-playing brothers powerful swing that never helped him much as a player cause he couldn't hit shit, Gibson's visions of his wife randomly saying "swing away", the son's asthma/closed lungs keeping out the poison. Alien intruder is defeated, son is saved, Gibson's faith in God is restored. I'm an atheist but I find the whole thing very powerful/moving.

Doesn't need much explanation. Anybody that's been abused understands victim self-blame.

Unbreakable. I'm not sure what it is about this scene that gives me chills. But this is one of M. Night's best movies. This is a movie about a guy who might be a legitimate super hero(like with super powers and shit), but never knew it..andis just figuring that out. And he is pretty depressed for most of his adult life because he isn't doing what he is meant to do. I guess this scene is emotional because it's his first heroic act...first time he finally gets his purpose...trying to save a family from a powerful intruder. And it's the music too.

I liked this flashback scene too. He seemed to have somehow forgotten that he ripped a car door open during an emergency. I guess you could say he was too concerned about saving his girlfriend to notice what he had done.

Warrior. Brother-on-brother crime. Younger brother(Tom Hardy) hates older brother for abandoning him and their mother in an abusive household. And younger brother's shoulder was dislocated in the previous round. Tom Hardy was the better and more vicious fighter, and filled with hatred, was looking to quickly annihilate his older brother. Then his shoulder was dislocated, but he wouldn't just quit. Sadness ensues.

Dark Knight. Making the climb. The bats flying out right before he takes the leap was a nice touch.

I really like this coming out of retirement scene too. Trolling the tunnels with Catwoman:

The Village. She's physically blind and there are monsters running around outside. But, the amount of faith she has in her man(that he will come for her)...how well she knows and trusts him...is pretty damn moving.

You know it was coming:

UP: Everyone talks about the beginning of Up, but the whole reason for his trip is because he feels he was unable to keep his promise to Ellie to give her a grand adventure. Then he looks through the photo album and sees her message at the end:

Tangled: That whole scene with the king and queen and the lanterns' initial release (before the 'I See the Light' sequence). Just the emotion they get across without any words being spoken gets to me, not to mention the music that follows.

Frozen: With Anna freezing from the inside out, and feeling like no one loves her especially after being rebuked by Elsa and betrayed by Hans, Olaf brings her back from her despair by sharing with her the meaning of love and telling her she's worth melting for (contains a major spoiler, but over year, so if you haven't seen it by now, I doubt you'd care about such things).

And the big sacrifice. Yes, we all know she's going to live, but she doesn't know that and believes she's giving up her chance to live in order to save her sister. (again, spoilers).

FFS, I just experienced a huge range of deep emotions working through this thread. I forgot how touching those Inception scenes were... and how uplifting the end of Shawshank Redemption is. The final scene of Brokeback Mountain is also a highlight. I've seen that movie three times now, and no matter how stoic I try to be, I always have to wipe away tears at the end.

More touching scenes from Disney:

Lilo & Stitch: Two sisters living on their own, the older struggling to be both mother and sister to the other. After a fight, this is the scene that follows:

This scene occurs after a social services agent determines that the older sister will not be able to properly care for the other.

This one has spoilers from How to Train Your Dragon 2. It's been well over the two week grace period that Screen Junkies set, so tough luck.

I couldn't find the actual video, but I did find the script for this scene: Stoick, after long believing his wife dead, discovers she is alive and standing right in front of him. It turns out she was merely kidnapped, not killed, by a dragon and decided to stay with them, believing they were not the monsters Berkians originally thought. Here is her speech and Stoick's response (along with some descriptors for effect):

Valka: I know what you're going to say, Stoick. How could I have done this? Stayed away all of these years. And why didn't I come back to you? To our son.

Stoick steps towards her, wide-eyed and speechless.

Valka: Well, what sign did I have that you could change, Stoick? That anyone on Berk could? I pleaded so many times to stop the fighting, to find another answer, but did any of you listen?

Stoick continues to close the gap, mesmerized. With every step, Valka becomes increasingly flustered. She backs into an ice wall, with nowhere to go, and Stoick just a few paces away.

Valka(tearful): I know that I left you to raise Hiccup alone... but I thought he'd be better off without me. And I was wrong, I see that now, but...

Stoick gently reaches a hand toward her face.

Valka: Oh stop being so stoic, Stoick. Go on... SHOUT, SCREAM, SAY SOMETHING!

Stoick: You're as beautiful as the day I lost you.

How to Train Your Dragon 2: With Valka being gone from Berk for so long she is unsure of returning with her husband and son. Then Stoick sings their song.

Bittersweet ending. Reminds me of graduating high school. I'm pretty sure that's the first time the kid smiles...which was supposed to mean something.

Didn't enjoy Interstellar that much at first(probably due to the fact that I watched it in pieces and the volume was bad), but I watched some clips recently and it's growing on me.

Well-made kids' movies hit you because they know how to look past it's main audience. In other words, such movies aren't just for kids.

Lefty tells Donnie he loves him and you can see it eating Donnie alive, since Donnie knows he's already effectively killed Lefty.

Donnie breaks it down for his wife, telling her that he's realized the FBI is no better than the criminals they're trying to collar.

Lefty gets sent for.
