Indeed. They are the most singularly indecipherable band I've ever heard... and I listen to death metal! From what I've read, Elizabeth Frasier's lyrics are a combination of various languages including some made-up words, so perhaps most of it isn't supposed to be understood beyond an emotional level. Occasionally you can hear the title of a song in the lyrics and everything else is just random words: "Moody suns and muddy cups, rows of pearly dew drops' drops, is the ugly ugly pity pity by the pearly dew drip oaks." or something like that. FWIW, I enthusiastically recommend everything they did from Head Over Heals to Heaven or Las Vegas. Basically a string of five truly great albums. Treasure is perhaps the best starting place, but you can't go wrong with any of them (I'm personally fond of Blue Bell Knoll and Victorialand). Lots of their best stuff is on EPs/Singles collected in the 4-disc Lullabies to Violaine set (from the above, Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops and The Spangle Maker were both from the same EP named after the latter).

I heard quite a bunch of their songs from the albums you mentioned, thanks to Youtube automatically redirecting me to their well-known songs. But yeah, I will probably start from the top and go song-by-song soon.

I actually love the "indecipherable" bits that work based on pure emotion. It's one of the reasons I love Bjork, especially her Pagan Poetry - the moment she starts belting random Icelandic syllables (IIRC) is pure magic.

Bjork is another deep love of mine and I do love those moments where she slips into Icelandic. I think I've said before I consider her the best solo artist to come along since Prince. Homogenic and Vespertine are two of my 10/10 all-time favorites.

Yeah, the Buckley/Frasier thing was a great pairing. Apparently they were quite infatuated with each other's voices and had a pretty intense personal relationship for a short while before his death, which devastated Frasier. Cocteau Twins also did an excellent cover of his Song to the Siren on the 4AD Compilation This Mortal Coil:


BTW, if you love Cocteau Twins you might check out another 4AD artist, Dead Can Dance. The music is quite different (DCD mix gothic and world music), but Lisa Gerard of DCD is another angelic singer, though her male partner sings too. Here's one with both of them (she comes in towards the end):

It took me a while to figure out that Song to the Siren is a Tim Buckley track... Hadn't heard it before, a gorgeous number, and it really just seemed ripe for a Cocteau Twins cover.

Both of those tracks with Lisa Gerard were sublime. Will probably go scavenging Youtube later to discover more from the duo.

Pretty much everything after their first album is worth hearing. I don't love their "sound" as much as CT, but at their best they're utterly hypnotic and atmospheric. Great dark room/headphone listening material.

I was actually trying to think of famous black actresses who have that sensitive but tough/edgy/dark, rocker-chick vibe about them. Zoe Kravitz(who played one of the wives, which I'm sure you're quite aware of) is the closest I could think of but she's not quite as emo as Stewart.

I'm not knowledgeable about actresses, no matter their race (I can only name five famous black actresses off the top of my head), but Zoe Kravitz is also the closest I can think of. That's not saying anything. Tbh I've only seen her in about three things and she never made much of an impression on me. I think Kristen Stewart has a complete monopoly on the "sensitive but tough/edgy/dark rocker-chick" thing right now. Other actresses try but none come close. Dakota Fanning? lmao
