I know some people in the forum are into the Civ games, I'm wondering if this newest iteration was worth picking up?

I'm not even sure I'm willing to take a chance after the atrocity known as Civ5.

Not a clue about the Civ games, but on the subject of strategy games I recommend Europa Universalis IV. Racked up over 900+ hours on it now, I love it.
