It's supposedly to close a "loophole" in which violence against family members is punished more harshly than violence against strangers. Leaving aside the fact that stronger penalties for beating family members than strangers is actually a good thing, I don't know why they couldn't have closed the loophole by, you know, making the penalties for beating up strangers stronger.

This is reported by many sources. I guess it's genuine.

What does not surprise me is that the Russian Orthodox Church seems to be in favor of this law. Religious fundies have a tendency of believing that the family should have higher authority than the State.

Maybe humanity does not deserve to survive as humans.
