Pretty good cartoon on netflix from none other than Guillermo Del Toro. It's about two worlds existing, Trolls and Humans, but only a certain group of trolls are bad and are enemies to both humans and trolls. The good trolls have a protector known as a "Trollhunter", in which an amulet chooses a specific troll to hunt the bad trolls, conferring upon them a special armor and weapon. However, this time around, the amulet decided to get cheeky and choose a human as the Trollhunter for the first time.
It definitely still has some kid friendly trappings, but it's very much one adults can enjoy too. It's worth checking out, especially since it's one of the last projects Anton Yelchin did before passing away.

It's Avatar/Dances With Wolves all over again. However, this time around, the amulet decided to get cheeky and choose a human as the Trollhunter for the first time.

Actually, no. You think that Del Toro would be so simplistic? They give a pretty good reason a few episodes in why the amulet may have chosen him over the son of the previous hunter.CashRules wrote:It's Avatar/Dances With Wolves all over again. However, this time around, the amulet decided to get cheeky and choose a human as the Trollhunter for the first time.
Trolls, in this world, like in many stories can't withstand daylight. They turn to stone and become vulnerable.
It's later revealed that there is a larger scheme unfolding. To meet the ultimate goal, these bad trolls are working with changelings, a human/troll mix. These hybrids can appear human and walk in the daylight, allowing them to continue the plan throughout the day and not just at night. As a human, Jim can walk in the day and investigate more readily & freely than a troll stuck underground waiting fir night to fall.
As a human, Jim also can bring a different nuance due to his unfamiliarity and skill (Ex: much more nimble than the larger trolls). He gains insight as do the trolls he protects.
Sully from Avatar simply appropriated their traditions to the point of being the best. Jim isn't necessarily better than the trolls. Simply a different choice.

Re: Trollhunters
I don't really get the Dances with Wolves and Avatar comparisons. In both films a white guy is accepted by natives, and that's pretty much where the similarities stop. In Avatar Sully becomes better than all the natives and saves the planet by being the ultimate badass. In Dances with Wolves, Kevin Costner doesn't become better than the natives at anything, he just learns their language and befriends them, and then they save his ass. The only thing he does that could be considered white saviorish is telling them about the herd of buffalo, but it's not like he tracks the buffalo or uses any skill at all for this. He just accidentally runs into them.
Re: Trollhunters
The comparison is mostly about "group A and group B are fighting; main character is member of group A, and he switches to being a member of group B instead". I also hear Avatar compared to Pocahontas for the same reason. But to me, that's a generic enough plot point that Avatar actually did have a unique story.
