A current bill in the U.S. Senate, primarily sponsored by Democrat Ben Cardin and Republican Rob Portman, would make it a felony, punishable by a minimum $250,000 fine and a maximum $1,000,000 fine plus 20 years in prison, for American citizens engaged in international commerce to join in an international boycott of Israel to protest that country's treatment of Palestinians. It currently has the support of 29 Republicans and 14 Democrats in the Senate. Notable co-sponsors include Democrats Chuck Schumer and Richard Blumenthal and Republicans Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. Just think, with only seven more votes they can pass this wonderful piece of legislation (because of course VP Penis will cast the tie-breaking vote in favor) and send it to the House where a similar bill has already received the support of 237 Representatives, 174 Republicans and 63 Democrats. For non-Americans, 218 Representatives is a majority of the House. Bi-Partisanship is a wonderful thing. Thank God for establishment Democrats standing up to the abuses of power by the Republican Party. This is clearly the fault of Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein supporters just like when that pathetic shitstain, Cory Booker, helped fuck poor Americans on imported prescription drugs. Several Senators, including dickhead Cardin, have tried to deny that the bill imposes any penalties at all but thankfully the ACLU has reviewed the actual language of the bill and is calling these asshats on their bullshit. The bill itself does not directly impose any penalties, however it amends two existing laws, the Export Administration Act of 1979 and the Export-Import Act of 1945, and makes such boycotts violations of those two laws thus imposing the severe penalties imposed by both laws.

Yeah Maz mentioned this in the other Israel thread. I'm completely confused as to how a bill like this can even begin to work. On the surface, it sounds like its punishing political thought, which is a pretty clear violation of the first amendment. The part I'm not sure of is if it's significantly different from a law saying that someone who owns a store can't choose to deny service to various protected groups. Both seem to be saying "if you do business in public, you can't choose with whom you'll do business".
