Tales of D&D

Post by Unvoiced_Apollo »

Sork'n: My character - Human Fighter.
Margus: Tiefling Warlock
Bianca: Dwarf Barbarian
Longshanks: Halfling Monk

In a foreign city (on a diplomatic mission), our party enters a magic shop. Buying a few supplies, we see a magic carpet that catches our eye. After some straightforward negotiations, we find even with the talked down price we really couldn't afford it. So the shopkeep offers to give us a large discount if we take care of someone harassing his wife. Everyone of course takes this to mean murder. Being renowned, experienced (read high level) adventurers, we knew it would be difficult to get away with it.

We didn't directly accept or reject the offer. We let it simmer while accepting an open invitation from the mayor. We were having a nice discussion of larger sociopolitical issues. Eventually I asked what the mayor thought of Gareth (the man we were asked to get rid of). She said he was a bit of a nuisance. Margus then piped up and asked how the town felt about murder. At which point the mayor said it was frowned upon and given to guards to watch us while we finished our business in town.

We were allowed some leeway, including dining at the tavern Gareth was known to frequent. Bianca announces our presence (being famed adventurers & all) and buys a round of drinks from the bar. I grab a couple of drinks from the bar and ask where to find Gareth. I approach and Margus follows. I had not intended for Margus to follow. But the ensuing conversation goes something like this:

Me: This crazy woman keeps following me. Can you pick her up?

Gareth: Pick her up? Oh I get what you're saying. You want me to show her a good time

Me: Uh yeah...that's it.

(Margus shooting daggers at me)

Margus: *whispering*Sork'n don't you let him touch me

Gareth: I don't know. She doesn't look interested.

Me: Oh that's just her foreplay.

(Margus throws her

Gareth: Nah. I don't think she's interested.

Me: I see. The rumors ARE true. *Shopkeeper's wife* rejected you because you're impotent.

At that, Gareth throws a chicken leg at me. I go down in a performance exceeding the greatest soccer dives ever witnessed. I then yell that Gareth assaulted me. Margus backs up my claim. Gareth gets a noose around his neck & taken to the gallows. He is so fat that the noose breaks & he runs away.

The other guards are busy chasing him but the captain becomes our escort. We're allowed to return to the shopkeep. I flash my signet ring and state that someone matching Gareth's description assaulted me. He picked up what I was getting at and we were able to get our flying carpet at a huge, worthwhile discount.

TL;DR Another party member and I framed someone for assault on a noble, for which the penalty is death, in order to get a flying carpet. Framed person escapes but is an outlaw from the city.

I was thinking of roll20 and just got the name wrong. There is a D&D website called roll4 but it's something else.

Who's your DM? If they're a good one you can probably plan on getting attacked by Gareth and some of his hired hands in the future. Good story, anyway. If I was going to tell any D&D stories it would probably just be stuff that happened on Critical Role. Keyleth's Goldfish and Jester's Dust of Deliciousness being the first two that spring to mind.

For the hell of it, why not:

^ Funny thing about that moment is just how many arguments it sparked about RAW (rules as written) VS reality, including several scientifically-inclined folks chiming in about the physics of a goldfish hitting a water and them bamfing back to a human (or half-elf, in this case). See here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bh9ge2l1l5zk1 ... h.pdf?dl=0

Just when you thought D&D couldn't get nerdier!

Oh the DM warned me Sork'n might have a new nemesis. I'm up to three, one being the main BBEG and the third being my in-game wife (I missed the birth of my in-game son).

I personally had no issues with Keyleth's death (mainly because that is a VERY Keyleth way to die and in a way is an odd application of Rule of Cool that trumps RAW). I have a couple of RAW issues to the Dust of Deliciousness trick but again Rule of Cool trumps that. And the Hag could overcome the modify memory and just cause a whole bunch more trouble for the Nein.

Given how iconic of a moment that was I don't have any problems with it either. What were your RAW issues with the Dust of Deliciousness? The most awesome thing about that moment was the near hour-long dramatic buildup that had (among other things) Nott offering to reignite a war and Beau offering to permanent leave the M9... and then after all that gut-wrenching emotional content you just have Jester come in and play the ultimate prank on an uber-powerful being.

BTW, if you're looking for another good streaming D&D campaign, I'd highly recommend Caffeine's The Dungeon Run. Though I started watching several others after getting into CR, The Dungeon Run is the only one I've stuck with. They're about to have their 1-year anniversary so it hasn't been around long, but the RP'ing and DM'ing at its best is absolutely on par with CR.

Honestly, maybe it wasn't necessarily RAW but a "I don't remember Jester ever saying she put the Dust on the cupcake" thing. There probably should've at least been a slight of hand vs perception check, but like you say everything leading up to it trumps any such (admittedly ticky tack) skill check.

Good point, though I guess there's the question of whether or not the hag would've cared anyway, given that the dust would just look to be the equivalent of putting sprinkles on a cupcake. It's not like she was pulling it out of a bag marked with a skull and crossbones or something!

Our DM is trying to kill us. He threw 5 orcs at 4 level 1 characters. We survived thanks to things like the Goliath's Stone's Endurance ability and a sleep spell taking one orc out at the beginning. But that encounter pinged us to level 2.

Then he throws a random encounter of 3 bugbears practically right after. By all accounts, we should've run. We didn't (the gnome rogue had some holdover anger issues because the orcs barbecued a gnome). Our fighter only had 6 hp. I didn't think I could roll high enough for sleep to work at the outset. We managed to pull out a victory, though at the cost of our ranger going into death saving throws (she survived luckily). Be basically gambled by splitting the party in two directions and used cover where available. The fighter & rogue managed to plink one to death with arrows. My wizard laid down a minor illusion to give the rogue cover & once confident the remaining two had been softened up, then he casts sleep. One bugbear remained conscious and used his action to get into melee with my wizard. However the goliath dashes into view & my wizard disengages to behind the goliath. The rogue & goliath then bat clean up on both remaining bugbears. We made it to level 3 because of this.

*Note: Our DM really isn't trying to kill us. I know because by all accounts, only one party member saw the bugbears & he could've used their Surprise Attack feature on the rest of us. He also could've made two opportunity attacks on the rogue in the previous encounter but justified it as another one was also in melee with the goliath. I've actually had a fun time trying to figure out some tactics where we face overwhelming odds.

Had to bump this thread for the recent Critical Role development where finally learned what happened to Keyleth's mom after like 5 years of only knowing she disappeared:

Talk about playing the long-game! Some genius level stuff right there from Matt, and Marisha's reaction when it hits her is just hilarious.

Oh yeah. That was a great moment. I was seeing in the chat in earlier episodes that they were guessing Viridian was Keyleth's mom. But I missed the clues (forgot she was missing a leg) and it appears so did the players.

And just think, if the Traveler didn't suggest Rumblecusp as part of his own machinations, we may still not know what happened to her mother.
