Sooo... I might lose a friendship over my Essay and Socialism.

So if you guys have been following my posts on the board. You know I had to write about capitalism and socialism during the civil war in Guatemala for a friend. She's my best friend and she is studying in a university that impulses capitalism. She and I both studied in a university that's very pro-socialist. So I at least, took over those ideals.
I wrote the essay denouncing the military for what it did during the war, denouncing the system and basically siding with the revolutionary army that was composed mostly by the indigenous people. But I forgot a tiny little fact. She lives in a military compound which means she probably has military family, so she called, after I texted her telling her I just sent her the thing, and she started pretty much denigrating the mayans and told me the story about how her mom's boyfriend died by the guerrilla.
She even forgot about the United Fruit Company, how could she forget about the United Fruit Company? Is like she chose to only understand what's convenient for her! She started defending President Rios Montt who committed the largest massacres, claiming it was the guerrilla who attacked first, she basically turned into a militaristic babbling idiot.
So I was like "whoops! May I have that essay back?, please! Needs rewrites!"
So yes, I might not have a friend anymore after tonight.

I wonder what she is going to do when she finds out I will be one of those people pushing for a genocide trial.

Almost as badly overrated as socialism.

Is being a passive aggressive prick hard work for you or does it come naturally?

If people are going to make passive aggressive cunty comments, they should at least grow the balls required to be actually aggressive.

He can be aggressive when he wants. Remember when he called me a fucking idiot for daring to interject some nuance and context to discussions of the Charlie Hebdo killings?
He also implied I'm, like, pro-murder or something. Whee!

I stumbled upon this gif when searching for the others. I can't tell if it's real or staged. I hope no one seriously injured, but I can't stop laughing at it.

For the record, I think it's pretty clear that you were not saying she was some dumb bitch and that you would have to break off your friendship, but more like she might not be so fond of you anymore based on your political opinions on the military, which could lead to losing her as a friend. Noting a tension in a friendship that could potentially lead to losing that friendship(which is not even necessarily owed, but actually very diplomatic approach) =/= "what a dumb bitch that doesn't deserve me as a friend!"

Yeah..what some people failed to understand is that we were criticizing the west's racist, myopic, and hypocritical framing and response to the murders. But, because they insist on a simplistic framing, they interpreted criticism of their problematic framing as justifying the brutal murders. Like we were responding to the murders...rather than responding to their response of the murders.
Just like criticizing Ronson's bullshit framing of the Sacco incident =/= justifying any harassment/bullying she experienced. When people..in any other context...have shown an ability to think fairly critically, suddenly seem to lack that ability in conversations about Hebdo and Sacco, it betrays their bigotry.

Nooo.. of course not. Talking about the military with people involved in the military in a context where war crimes come at play should always be handled with care. In my post I meant to say that I screwed up by writing a 2 page rant about how the military exploited the indigenous under capitalism's ideals, to a person who obviously feels fond of the military. So I screwed up.
I guess it was something similar to what you experienced when you saw American Sniper. But you knew about the people, imagine if you didn't and how would it be if you started saying "ugh such bullshit propaganda about a war criminal" in front of that family.
Besides I expressed my frustration on her forgetting what the United Fruit Company was and the role it played in our history. But I do understand this subject is very sensitive and it's still dividing people nowadays. I told Whitey about a long discussion I had with my parents over this, since I expressed my sentiments on the genocide trial, I'm pro-genocide and they are anti-genocide trial, and they basically told me to shut up since I didn't live through the war, they did, so their opinion is more important.

Because you were sarcastically referring to her friend while really insulting Liszt. Insulting someone indirectly is pretty passive agressive. What's your problem with her, did you visit Guatemala only to have her shit on your dog or something?

So, you're saying that all of Sacco's harassment and bullying was completely justified? Wow, you're an asshole.

When I first read Ptolemy's reply, I was mostly confused, because I didn't see it as sarcastic, but also didn't see at all how it could make sense as a reply to the post. But after reading the way other people took it, then I now see that it most certainly appears to be what other people are saying it is... so in other words, if it was meant as something other than a sarcastic remark meant to insult Liszt, then I don't quite get what it was meant as.

Yeah, when I first saw the reply here I didn't think much of it. I thought it seemed like an odd, over-the-top response...but not necessarily sarcastic. But I also didn't notice the popcorn image, at first. It was the interaction on the "spanish logic" thread that suggested to me that he might have some issue with Liszt. Then when I came to this thread and noticed the popocorn image and saw whitey's response...that's when it first came across to me as passive aggressive. But, he's denying it..so, who knows?

I saw it as passive aggressive as like I said, indirectly insulting someone via sarcasm falls under passive aggressive.
He claims he was directly insulting Liszt, but the way it reads is that he describes some negative characteristics, then starts the next sentence with 'She'...it seems likely to me that if someone does that they're referring to the person just described, as she. So it seems like he's insulting the friend sarcastically. And he still hasn't explained his issue with her. As I talk to her more than anyone on this board and she's certainly not self centred or narcissistic.
I guess I'm understandably biased, but Ptolemy was being a prick.

There's some miscommunication. I believe he was calling the friend a narcissistic bitch..not Liszt. And I don't think he claimed to be directly insulting Liszt. What came across as passive aggressive to me was that he seemed to be implying that Liszt was being a petty drama queen by playing up her reaction.

He'd been a bit hostile to her in a different thread, which contributes to why I think his intent was to insult Liszt, and not the friend. And I feel he did it in an indirect, passive sort of way by being sarcastic like he'd been in the other thread.
I don't think I can quite see it your way.

I think we're both concluding that it comes across as an indirect insult to Liszt, but we seem to be taking different paths to that conclusion. I think he may have been indirectly insulting Liszt by sarcastically exaggerating his insult directed at the friend.
But either way, and whether this is a misunderstanding or not, this is what happens when you are a somewhat hostile poster with a cryptic posting style. If you feel the need to be hostile (justified or not), at least be clear about it. Unless you're just returning the favor.
