Hundreds of years of privilege have conditioned white people to subconsciously assume they are superior and deserving. Even if they don't think they benefit from such privilege (or worse, deny its existence), what are they to do about it? You'll be hard-pressed to find an educated heterosexual white male turn down a job offer on such a principle, or just plain not look for a job because of the fact that he has a better chance of getting it than anyone else. Privilege is something worth acknowledging, but what is one to do about it?

Privilege is something worth acknowledging, but what is one to do about it?

It depends on what power you have and where; e.g. a white HR manager could be aware that they might be subconsciously favoring white job applicants, and find ways to be more objective about it (e.g. by not requiring a photograph, or judging applicants without their name attached).

Or for regular white people - being aware of privilege helps one not be unintentionally racist.

a = b + a
a = a + a
a = 2a
1 = 2
