That's really awful. People suck.
Also, that shitty top comment on the third article is from a friend I had in high school. That's kind of.. a shock. What a small world. And I thought she was cool too.

Yeah - not great, depression is a hideous enuff thing without people piling on with trans-hate.
DA
Do you mean this comment?

In addition to the generalized crisis hotlines listed at the end of the article, there is a crisis line staffed entirely by trans and non-binary-identified volunteers at translifeline.org (877) 565-8860 ... and it should go without saying that 4chan is categorically one of the worst places to go in a crisis, or ever. >.>
Cos, I'm not reading this as something awful, I mean, it sounds a bit victim blamey but not horrendously so, but it comes off more cautionary and helpful to anyone who may be reading this article feeling similar and wondering where they might find help .. in which case, she is absolutely correct, 4chan is possibly the worst place in all of the online world to go for advice on anything.

No, it's the one with ten thumbs up. I thought hers was the top comment. It's the first one and I just assumed that meant it was the top one.

Also, I laughed at DA finding his friend in a random internet page. Not at the tragedy.
They world is filled with horrible people and I'm sad people will make this sort of personal attacks to another human being.
Anakin, let's move to the uk together!

Yeah, that comment was worse than the other one, but still not that horrendous, other than how it implied the internet was not at fault for this. But 4chan is still a horrible place to go for anything. A while back a few of them were apparently planning to find suicidal trans kids on tumblr and convince them to kill themselves. They might have just been trolling, but any site where that kind of thing happens is not the kind of place to go for life advice.
Anakin, let's move to the uk together!
Yes!

Well - it's a great place to find porn. It's a terrible place to solicit advice on anything!

Yes!
Better weather, food and economy over here - just say'n

Rachel's friend just posted this:

Apparently the harassment was not the direct cause, because she'd already been suffering from chronic illness that was her main motivation for suicide.

4chan; they were those behind the harassment of Adria Richards.
And now this.
Maybe someone should give 4chan a taste of their own medecine and flood them with DoS attacks, until 4chan is taken down.

It's victim-blaming in that it put most of the responsibility on the woman to not make poor decisions which might lead her to suicide rather than on the people who actually told her to commit suicide. It's implying that she deserves most of the blame (her "pure stupidity" is "jaw-dropping"!) rather than the people who actually told her to kill herself, that the responsibility lies mostly or entirely on her. Even ignoring for a moment the simple fact that people struggling with suicidal thoughts aren't known for their rational acumen, putting all the focus on her helps to erase the actions of the people actually responsible. That's victim-blaming.
She had basically two choices. She could have morally castigated the people who told her to kill herself, or she could have morally castigated the suicidal person who made a poor choice. She chose the latter, when she could have easily chosen the former. That's victim-blaming, and moreover that shows a really shitty victim-blaming mindset. And all victim-blaming is "horrendous".
Sorry to change the subject but really, that needs to be said.

Prolly Anakin, he's the one who said that the comment wasn't all that bad.

Ok, fair point. I misread it as a general statement on 4chan being horrible, but missed the part where she said it was pure stupidity to 'use' it as a driving force to suicide, and yeah, that's victim blaming. Although, compared to lots of other comments I've seen, this still isn't that bad relative to them - e.g. posts about how the high suicide rate proves that all trans people are mentally ill, because mentally healthy people don't kill themselves, or that transitioning obviously wasn't the right choice if 'he' still committed suicide, and how it's all the fault of liberals making this stuff out to be normal and needing acceptance rather than getting trans people 'real help', etc, which were s lot more rage inducing.
