Re: Aels...don't read this
I read it anyway because I do what I want.
As to #1, in the original fairy tale, the enchantress who turns the Beast into... a beast is a fairy, and the fair folk are pretty much the embodiment of warped morality.
#5) is a misunderstanding of the ye olde concept of hospitality where you *did* let people stay in your houses and it was a mark of honour that you provided for them while they were there. IT'S WINTER. THAT OLD LADY IS GONNA FREEZE.
#6)... yeah, he is probably prince of a French principality on account of literally everyone having French names, so duh. Maybe no one cared what happened to the prince because now that their boss was gone, they could do whatever the fuck they wanted. Ye olde French peasant party all day every day! Or maybe no one wants to look into it too closely because a whole castle full of people disappeared and they think that place is haunted because the furniture moves around and there are weird ginormous animal footprints everywhere. Or maybe magic.
#7) HE'S A MISOGYNIST. THAT'S IT. THAT'S THE CHARACTER. Nothing is going to happen to his reputation because she's a woman (and given that Gaston gets her father institutionalised, the daughter of a known lunatic) and he's the hero of the village, to the extent that everyone sings songs about how he's the actual literal best? He doesn't care what their marriage is like. If the author of this article doesn't think that some men will pursue an unattainable woman just because she's unattainable, then they need to go out and meet some more gross douchebags.
#8) He... fell off a ledge. I don't know why everyone is supposed to be more horrified by that than they are. People fall off things sometimes. And probably no one is going to get all up in the Beast's face about it, because not long after Gaston dies, the Beast is transformed into a prince again, and everyone's probably like 'Oh shit, it's the prince, we'd better start grovelling' and they probably aren't going to think 'Oh hey, maybe the Beast and the prince are the same person and therefore we should lynch the guy who is literally in charge of everything and can have us all executed'.
#9) is fair. Everyone thinks this.
#10) see number #1.
So basically almost all of this is wrong

Like, seriously with #7. Seriously. The whole point of Gaston is that he is not interested Belle as a person, he doesn't care about her feelings, and he disrespects her boundaries. The fact that he's the sort of person who would force a woman into marriage against her will is the very reason that Belle doesn't want to marry him. That's not a plot hole, that's their basic characterisation. He doesn't care if she hates him.

For reals, Gaston is one of my favourite ever Disney villains.

Mansplaining: Well of course he don't care, but...I think the point of number 7 is asking what exactly is he going to do to keep her there. What exactly is Gaston going to do motivate or "motivate" her to stay once Maurice is officially kept out of the asylum.aels wrote:Like, seriously with #7. Seriously. One of the best lines (albeit wrong) to come from Disney.aels wrote:

Well, whatever abusive people usually do to keep their wives with them when their wife is not economically independent (see: poor inventor's daughter) and in an era where divorce is probably illegal and where everyone believes that the husband is the greatest thing since sliced Jesus. Like, even if Belle and Maurice find the means to leave, there is nothing to stop Gaston following them and dragging her back and threatening to have Maurice put back in the asylum. He's a pretty good hunter and they aren't going to be able to travel very fast.

Re: Aels...don't read this
The problem is abusers typically go after people they can manipulate. Belle, even though she's not economically independent, I don't see as someone who can't figure out a way to escape. She after all did just simply leave the Beast's once without his permission. She only didn't get away because she wasn't prepared for the wolves because she left on impulse and dragged the Beast back after saving her butt. Belle seems like the type, if stuck with Gaston, that would have a plan to escape. Point is, she's proven time and time again she can't be manipulated and likely wouldn't be the kind of woman to be the victimaels wrote:Well, whatever abusive people usually do to keep their wives with them when their wife is not economically independent (see: poor inventor's daughter) and in an era where divorce is probably illegal and where everyone believes that the husband is the greatest thing since sliced Jesus. She's also read books, so I'm sure she knows how to cover tracks. Though she needs to break that habit of singing about how terribly boring her town is. That'll be a dead give away when Gaston overhears of some strange broad dissing the town she's living in.

Re: Aels...don't read this
Except didn't the French do exactly that around the time this story is set? Aren't Belle and The Beast doomed to be lynched anyway?therefore we should lynch the guy who is literally in charge of everything and can have us all executed'.
Re: Aels...don't read this
Achilles has a theory that everyone in the village knew the Beast was really the prince but they were lynching him anyway because French peasants don't take no shit and vive la revolution.

I'm pretty sure the French were just copying us.aels wrote:Achilles has a theory that everyone in the village knew the Beast was really the prince but they were lynching him anyway because French peasants don't take no shit and vive la revolution.
