I woke up this morning in a better country

Yesterday Ireland became the first country to bring in marriage equality through a popular vote, as opposed to direct legislation or judicial rulings. Almost a century ago Ireland threw off the shackles of British imperialism only to effectively hand power over to the Catholic Church. This genuinely feels like the culmination of a decades-long struggle to reverse that mistake.

It's good news, but it's ridiculous that human rights should be subject to a popular vote. That just says that the minority only has rights whenever the majority decides to allow them those rights.

Agreed, and I think anyone who voted yes would agree that the natural rights of the minority should not be at the whim of the majority. But we're dealing with statutory rights here, an amendment to our constitution, and that requires a referendum in this country.

It's not like we're talking about a real country anyway. It's closer to being a real country than some backwads place like Guatemala but that's not saying a lot.

I should have titled this thread "I woke up this morning in a better country than yours".

Only if you prefaced it with Attention Liszt, and then you could have just said every morning.
