2015 Summer movies I rewatched/will rewatch in theaters

Post by Unvoiced_Apollo »

Rewatched:

Inside Out
Jurassic World

Saw these yesterday, back to back (used my rewards points for Jurassic World)

While fun, I just can't rate Jurassic World above a 6. There are just too many problems with it. The kids are annoying. I wanted the older one to be eaten. The romance & divorce come out of nowhere. As a kid, I imagined crossing a t-Rex w/ raptor, but what they had was just so unimaginative. Nice homages, but too many dumb aspects. If they had gone full blown B-movie carnage, I'd put it back at 7 because those dumb aspects would be part of the charm. They didn't though, so

Inside Out on the other hand I think is still a return to form. After a few years if mediocre films, I think.this is Up Quality (though maybe not Wall-E/Incredible quality). This film brought back those heart-tugging moments the Studio is known for. I felt for Riley's character because I felt for the emotions and what they were going through. I loved the jokes, many of which I missed because they were so natural and subdued. The visual jokes are great too (who doesn't know that annoying person that is always just so peppy you want to hurt them). And it delivers a great lesson that I think even adults forget. If this had been 2-d with a darker color palette, I would have sworn this was a Bluth film. I do think they could have been more imaginative with it, but the imagination that was put into it is very creative. Still an 8/10.

Will Rewatch:

Mad Max Fury Road: Saw it in theaters in 3D I originally thought it was your run of the mill over the top action movie. But having seen it again on Blu-ray 3D, I see why it's so well received. It doesn't waste words. It's storytelling is just so visual, you almost don't need what little dislogue there is. It's pretty much a silent action movie, which is quite a feat in a world where all the scripts seem like nothing but exposotion. I'm not a fan of shaky cam because so few directors know how to use it. Miller is one of those few who do. It, the frantic pacing, the action scenes, and even the few quiet moments work. It's getting rer-release in IMAX this weekend, and I plan to go. 9/10.

Straight Outta Compton - 10/10

Never heard of Love & Mercy. NWA doesn't interest me. Dope isn't playing anywhere near me.

Love & Mercy - 10/10

It's a movie about Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. Paul Dano and John Cusack are two of my favorite actors and they each do a fantastic job here playing Wilson at different stages in his life. Much of the focus on younger Wilson lands on the time he was working on the album "Pet Sounds" and the emotional and mental crises it implied. And we follow the older Wilson around in the 80s and 90s and the whole controversy surrounding his mental condition and care. It's really really good. Even if you're not a fan of The Beach Boys and don't know Wilson's story, it's a good one and the two leads are amazing. Also terrific supporting performances from Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti.

I think it's funny that Giamatti plays almost the exact same character in two different music industry biopics this year, Love & Mercy and Straight Outta Compton. He's the same shady/deceitful band manager-type who ends up being called out and yelling a lot. He does angry/shady really well.

I heard about the beach boys one, just completely forgot that's what it was called.

The only time I have ever paid twice to see a movie in a theatre is if I had seen it with grown up and also promised to take the kids to see it - or vice versa.
Having said that .. I'd rewatch Jurassic at home just because I like effects movies that aren't awful. Jurassic had its flaws and I'd agree with your rating of about 6.. it would take substantial rework to get it much past a 7 tho. There was a lot wrong with this movie that happened at a fundamental level.
I didn't mind the T-rex/raptor thing .. I did mind the trained raptors jogging along with Pratt rather than eating him. The kids .. ugh .. ..the love story, even the whole "we have a state of the art facility and we still can't tell whether a dinosaur is inside or outside of the cage thing"

Haven't seen inside and out.

Mad Max - saw this a few weeks back in the home cinema with the kids .. and didn't think all that much off it, neither did the kids.
But I did find myself thinking about it afterwards and decided to give it another watch resetting my expectations. Oddly enuff, I fucking loved it ion the second watch, I got it then and didn't before. It was probably a disconnect between what I was expecting and what I got rather than anything else. But I agree with everything you said. It was minimalist in its dialogue and over delivered in its style. You are plopped in the middle of a world that doesn't waste time explaining itself - you just have to catch up .. the pace is relentless, the whole movie is effectively one long car chase ..and it feels appropriately high octane.
The things that bothered me the most watching it on the first pass is that it was hard to get into what was going on - loads of details were just glimpsed on the screen like the detail on his back tattoo ..or the reason why he was being held as a blood bag. I didn't like the over the top flourishes like the speaker truck with the guitar player (played by a guy called Iota who I saw in Melbourne when he did Hedwig and the Angry inch - the man is amazing) .. so a second watch was almost mandatory as it gave me a chance to catch up ..

Duude, the best part is the guy with the guitar. He exploded the awesomemeter.

Inside Out is good to mediocre.

I doubt I will like Jurassic World.

That 7 would be the max, and only if they either went full B-movie carnage. I can forgive the trained rators, I can forgive the ending t-rex/raptor scene. What I canot forgive is having the park visitors rounded up in one building and do nothing with that. If you're going to go fun B-movie, go all the way with it.

Inside Out...imagine a Pixar movie made by 80's Don Bluth. That's pretty much what you get. It's an animated movie that has a lt of emotional moments and a very grown up lesson that even adults sometimes need to be reminded. It might not be appropriate for younger kids simply because it does have some slow moments and they might not understand a lot of the jokes. It's definitely a movie made through a parents' point of view, even though the main characters are emotions. If you can connect with Riley by feeling for the characters in her mind or relate to it as a parent, you'll like it. If not, it's going to be a long movie.

You've pretty much said eveything about MMFR.

Yeah - see even after the second watch, I'm not really sure I was feeling the Guitar fella - I do like the chap that played him, but that's neither here nor there in terms of how I felt it worked for MMFR ..
I think even after the second watch, I found it overly silly to the point where it kinda pulled me out of the action a bit. It was a huge part of the problem I had on the first watch and remained problematic on the second.
But - that's probably me. I don't really care. The movie is overblown and deliberately so and I guess having a 20 foot speaker stack mounted to the front of a semi carting around a electric guitarist on a gimble so that you have theme music on hand for your epic road battles - seems in keeping.

I doubt you would like Jurassic world either .. I disagree with Derived in that its not very very bad, its just not very very good and disappoints because of expectations - it's a fun enuff dinosaur flick that suffers many flaws and after all this time and after how well Jurassic park still hold up, its a bitter disappointment

Depends on how you define bad. It was entertaining, I guess. But it was also really sexist in its narrative choices, very few parts of it made any logical sense, the characters were not well-defined, and the editing was sloppy.

I agree that the movie is quite flawed. It's essentially a Syfy movie with a blockbuster budget. There's a great HISHE that talks makes fun of some of those flaws. As I said, I think they tried to go 50/50 with suspense & B-movie and it doesn't pay off. The only thing that I think makes the movie worthwhile is the pterosaur attack and the ending battle. Other than that, the because of their choices, the flaws aren't part of the charm but rather just create too many problems.

If Jurassic World had been rated R and gory as fuck, I'd probably wanna watch it. As it is, haven't seen it and don't really plan to.
