Re: Your best & worst movies of the summer
Out of what I've seen so far:
1. Inside Out - Just saw this on the plane on the way home. Was reluctant given everyone seems to have loved it and didn't want to set my expectations too high .. Verdict - enormously enjoyable and ridiculously intelligent.. The incredible is still the best Pixar ever .. but this is certainly worthy of the pedigree and substantially better than most.
2. . Mad Max Fury Road - Saw this a few weeks back and already reviewed. The long and short of it. Didn't like it at all on the first watch but gave it another go, then loved it.. Go figure.
3. Kingsman Much more enjoyable than I expected. Good but not great but certainly re-watchable.
4. Ex-Machina - Kinda a surprise but brilliant. Cool and clever, tight script and twisty in unexpected but thoughtful ways.
Movies that weren't as good as I was expecting
1. Age of Ultron - Loved the first one, this one was a pretty generic sequel, all fur coat and no knickers
2. Terminator Gensys - Pretty much as above alto did rewatch on the plane because "limited options on a 25 hour flight) .. and enjoyed it much more on the second watch.
3. Jurassic World - was a mediocre (as opposed to bad) movie that disappointed on expectations and execution given the budget.
4. Tomorrow land - wasn't actually bad, it was a bit kiddy but fun enuff. I was just disappointed that it wasn't as smart as I was expecting.
Worst
1. San Andreas - Just the worst, from its opening frame to the end an orgy of clichés and overblown effects. No substance, no science, no credibility and worse of all - no fun. Cringeworthy
2. Pitch Perfect 2 - I liked the first, this felt like a pisstake of that.

I would have included Ex Machina & Kingsman, but they weren't released during the summer here.thesalmonofdoubt wrote:Out of what I've seen so far:

Re: Your best & worst movies of the summer
I'm doing all movies for 2015, not just summer with 1 being most liked etc...
1. Spy - Melissa McCarthy was hilarious as usual but I think it was Jason Statham that really blew my mind. What he did was so freaking hilarious! I like it when actors can step outside of their typecast and pull off a great performance.
2. Kingsmen - I love Colin Firth so this was a no brainer for and even though I had heard nothing about it I was happy I rented it. There was a lot of kicking ass going on and I'd love to see Colin Firth take on Liam Neeson in a film because he'd kick Liam's ass.
3. Maggie - Who knew Arnie could play something other than a muscle man beating up people? He actually gave a pretty good in depth performance of a father dealing with a terrible situation within his life. There was no grandiose fluff, just real emotion from that man.
4. Mad Max - I think I let myself get to excited about how good this movie was. I definitely liked it but I found myself zoning a couple of times.
5. Age of Adaline - I didn't care much for Blake Lively...until I saw this film. I think this was a really interesting look on the whole "not aging" plot that we've all seen over film life. I didn't know Harrison Ford was in it but his role both creeped me out and made me appreciate the film more.
6. Avengers - decent enough but it felt kind of jerky and stilted at times. I think they need to end on this one and not do another.
7. Jurassic World - Over the top and I wish they had more dino's but it was entertaining enough
8. Furious 7 - Good god some of the scenes had my eyes rolling big time. I really hope this is the last one for this franchise.
9. Taken 3 and Run All Knight - I'm putting these together since they are pretty much identical "Liam kicks ass etc...". I think it's time for him to retired...after Firth kicks his ass of course.
10. Jupiter Ascending - ok, definitely stupid but I was entertained so I'm cool with it.
11. Hot Pursuit - Oh My God this was the worst movie I have seen in such a long time. WTF. The acting was terrible, script sucked...sucked sucked sucked!

Re: Your best & worst movies of the summer
From best to worst, of what's been released in theaters so far in 2015 (still plenty of good ones to come):
Straight Outta Compton
Love & Mercy
Ex Machina
The Winding Stream
Mad Max
Furious 7
What We Do In the Shadows
Dope
Insidious 3
Jurassic World
Hot Tub Time Machine 2
I feel like I'm forgetting something.....
Anyway, Inherent Vice and Leviathan and A Most Violent Year were released elsewhere in 2014 but not here til 2015, so I didn't count them. Otherwise they'd be very near the top.
