So I have a question for Game of Thrones fans.

Post by CashRules »

Does this ever become a show worth watching? I've suffered through the first four episodes of this and I'm convinced anybody who likes this crap must be in a coma. I don't remember the last time I saw anything this horrible but it was probably some B-movie teenage flick in the 80s and even most of those had this beat. Somebody please tell me this show eventually gets at least a 1000 times better.

I like the idea of The Walking Dead but it's been disappointing the last few seasons except for three or four episodes a season. It's become more of a guilty pleasure plus the fact that you have to sit through the rest of the episodes to know what's going on in the three or four good ones.

I've found that I only care about maybe 2 'main' characters in GoT, and their storylines. The rest I just watch cos it's on. I like the show, but it's not all that amazing. Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister are the only peeps I actually think have the best plots.

Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage are the only people in this show who can even act and Bean looks like he's bored to death and Dinklage doesn't deliver half the performance he did in a cheap indy flick like The Station Agent. The rest actually look like they're reading cue cards for every single line. At least I don't have to pay anything for The Walking Dead, this crap cost me $19.99 for the first season.

Do you know all the spoilers so far or have you managed not to hear anything about this show? Dinklage's best scene is when he bitchslaps Joffrey.

I've already seen him slap Joffrey. Yeah, I know Joffrey eventually dies. It sucked when that kid Bran survived his fall after being pushed by the Queen's brother/lover. Damn I wanted that kid to die. I thought Chandler Riggs was a horrible child actor but this kid just won the prize.

Honestly I felt it was okay, if a bit slow up until about halfway through the first season. If I remember correctly, episode 5 is the first one I really really liked.

I think most seasons are like that though, slowish buildup which then sets up things for the second half to be great .

Yeah, I felt is was quite boring when I first started watching it. I don't even know what compelled me to watch it, or to continue watching it. I guess my girlfriend and I were just watching it out of boredom, and felt compelled to continue because of the hype. But, I did feel like "Dafuq is this shit?" for like the first 3 to 5 episodes. The first time I felt any type of intrigue for the show was in the first couple episodes when Bran's wolf saves him and his mom from the assassin, and I was a little curious with what the hell they were doing with the Daenerys chick. Then the first time I started to actually feel some kind of investment in anything was I think in the second or third episode with the little conflict between the Lannister and Stark children. Where Joffrey is lying like a little bitch, Arya is standing up to him, Sansa is stuck in the mddle, and Ned is trying to stand up to his best friend and his vicious wife, for his children...then ends up killing the wolf himself..then Bran finally awakens from his coma when the wolf is killed. I really liked that sequence, and I wanted to murder Joffrey with my bare hands. I did not give a shit about anything happening until this point.

Then I think I started losing some interest during the remainder of the first half...with a few intriguing things happening here and there. But then things start to pick up and you're like "Hmmm...things are getting a bit tense *nervously eating popcorn*", then by the last 3 episodes you'll be like "WHAT THE FUCK??" and "HOLY SHIT!!" But, you really need the slow buildup from the first few episodes to appreciate the final episodes.

I honestly think one really needs knowledge of the history of the families/houses, migrations, past conflict, etc to fully appreciate the show. I refuse to read the books 'cause I'm not that nerdy, but I did read up on the history online and watched a few youtube videos after I watched season one. Then, months later, I rewatched season one and everything seemed to become so much more interesting. Even the boring scenes became intriguing because I had more context for what the hell they were talking about.

Finish the first season, if you still hate it, then it's not for you.

Yeah, rewatching the first season after you know who is who and what is what is another experience. You clearly don't appreciate how dumb Ned Stark is the first time you watch it and how out of his league he is.

And they have really good scenes, one of my favorites is the conversation between Cersei and Robert when they talk about "ONE army, ONE purpose."

Anyway, I learned all my politics from Song of Ice and Fire, like for example, I can explain the food hoarding going on in Venezuela using the Tyrell blockade towards King's Landing as an example.

Yeah, all Robert's scenes are entertaining. And Ned was being naive, but he's the moral center.

You know what it was? Part of the reason it kept interesting was because of the dramatic endings of each episode. Even though I didn't fully understand everything happening, the endings were interesting enough for me to go "now I have to watch the next one."(like Bran being pushed out of the tower, Ned having to kill Sansa's wolf, Catelyn pulling a dramatic "you in my hood!" on Tyrion and abducting him, the whole "black of hair" sequence, etc) ...then slowly my investment in the drama increased.

One thing I like about the show and the books is that there are very few characters who are completely evil or completely good.

Joffrey would be someone people would say is evil but then you have to think, did he ever stand a chance? Disinterested father, a mother who thinks she's as smart as Tywin and Tyrion but constantly fucks up, and coddles him way too much. It's no wonder he turned out an entitled twat, especially when he was heir to the throne! I think Ramsay is the only truly evil character in the show, he's a monster. Even the characters that are quite popular, aren't perfect. Tyrion is a whoring drunken shit at times, Jaime fucks his sister and pushes Bran out the window, but they're two of my favourite characters.

True. It really throws you off when a character you've pretty much dismissed as a sociopath suddenly reveals a human depth. Specifically referring to what Jamie says to Cat.

I think when one of our standards for judging a show's quality is "not every single one of the characters is a black-or-white cartoon", then maybe our standards need to be raised just a tiny bit.

Moral ambiguity and complex characterization is really something that should be kind of taken for granted nowadays in any show that tries to be mature. It's not really anything special. There's been moral ambiguity in television shows - and books and movies - for decades. Now it seems to me having a previously one-dimensional sociopath suddenly show depth in order to catch the audience off-guard (Jamie) is mostly a gimmick.

And btw in that particular instance with Jamie I thought it was really lazily done. Part of our reasons for disliking him was that he supposedly did a horrible thing in the past, but then it turns out later that he actually had a good reason for doing it! So he actually wasn't all that bad in the first place, we just thought he was bad all that time mostly because of narrative misdirection. No, that's really cheap. Anyone can do that. It's the same with pushing Bran out the window - we were shown it to get the sense that Jamie's a bad guy, but in the fourth book we find out that Cersei's such a crazy bitch that she probably would have made sure he did anyway. So he was really doing him a favor. I'm not really saying it isn't effective, but it's sort of lazy.

I get what you're saying, but I think I was more moved by the content of his revelation(as well as the actor's delivery) than the simple fact that it turned out he wasn't a psychopath. And, yes, moral ambiguity is already a common character trait(and often makes character's more relatable, because I think most of us have some moral ambiguity), but this extreme, complete 180 is less common. Suddenly going from wanting to kill a character to feeling for him/her isn't that common...at least, I haven't felt/seen much of that.

I think you mean Season 3. Episode 9 of Season 2 was The Battle of the Blackwater.

I loved that episode. Reading the books, I knew exactly what was coming, I knew when that music started playing that was the signal, I thought Roose Bolton had the best 'I'm going to murder you' face I've ever seen on TV. If you search on youtube for reactions to that episode, they're hilarious.

I saw Martin discussing the Red Wedding. He wanted to break the predictable plot of a dead hero's oldest son rising up to take revenge for his father. I imagine that's all the GoT series is, a lot of Martin breaking tropes for the shits and giggles of it all. The one that really annoyed me was the Viper and the Mountain. Fuck that guy.

I'm sure he was supposed to be about ten and still being breast fed. Oh, and when this thing is over Sansa will be sitting on the iron throne. She's been playing everybody since the first episode and they think they're playing her. Then as soon as she's named Queen, Arya is going to show up and put an arrow through her head. But first Sansa will have her cousin killed so that she inherits the Vale since everyone thinks her two younger brothers are dead.

The best line in this show so far:

"If I hear one more word come out of your cunt mouth I'm going to have to eat every chicken in this place."

I've decided to watch by just assuming that Daenerys is supposed to be mentally handicapped. That's the only way her character even makes sense.

That scene was fantastic. The Hound is a fantastic character.

I don't like Daenerys either. She's trying to act like a queen without any of the common sense and balance needed to rule. She looks good compared to her brother, but she's still terrible. I don't give a crap about her storyline.

Her dead husband is playing Aquaman in the Batman vs. Superman movie. He's probably a good choice since they seem to be going with the real tough guy Golden Age Aquaman version instead of the sissified Silver Age abomination. He'll only have a cameo but it's supposed to be a build up for the follow-up Justice League movie.

Regarding Danaerys, I've seen it summed up best like this. She's got a good heart, but she is usually slow to react to a situation and stalls making a decision, then her hand gets forced and she then over-reacts. Her only knowledge of how to be a good ruler is to not be like Viserys. It's a good start but it doesn't actually qualify you to lead.

She does still look really young, though I think they're doing that on purpose for the show. That said she still doesn't look 18 in real life. I think barely being over 5 foot probably doesn't help.
