This is the first I've heard of these people.

Statistically speaking, at least one of those kids is gay.

EDIT: Whoa, 2.3 million likes on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/19KidsandCounting

I am fascinated.

A scene out of a horror movie:

Jim Bob Duggar, the daddy, is one creepy dude. The girls aren't allowed to kiss until their wedding day and then he supervises their first kiss.

I googled them and read a bunch of articles, and they don't seem that much more evil than the average fundamentalist family; in some ways they're a lot better, because all that attention makes it hard to hide stuff, plus they seem at least earnest about living ideal Christian lives. They seem more ignorant than evil. And sometimes I'm jealous of big families, particularly those with siblings who get along well, because I feel lonely a lot. At least they won't be lonely. And they'll always have somewhere they belong.

My mother also said no kissing until just before marriage, although I tattled when my brother kissed his girlfriend, and apparently my mother forgot she ever made that rule. She doesn't seem to mind now, as long as there's no sex. She previously also said no dating until 21, but my brother had his first girlfriend at 19, and she didn't bat an eyelid. It's like I'm the only one who pays attention to stuff my parents say. [sigh]

A parent who is worried about their kids personal lives to the point they are not even allowed to be alone with a member of the opposite sex until their wedding night = one evil, creepy parent who needs to be shot in the face. Their support for anti-gay causes elevates them to bigots and bigots are evil by definition. Sadly, since you're right that it's a statistical probability that at least one of those kids is gay, that's a kid who is headed for a life of torment. My money is on Jinger, she's the one on the far right in the photo I linked.

I come from a family of eight kids. My mom had 13 brothers and sisters but my maternal grandmother was a gypsy so she kept spitting them out because she was sure some of her relatives would steal some of them.

In some cases it's a fear that their daughters might get raped, and given how often that happens on dates, it's not an unfounded fear. Of course, rape also happens within marriage, but fundamentalists generally don't consider marital rape to be rape. Which is a whole other discussion of creepiness.

I saw a bunch of articles on their support for anti-gay causes. They come off as more ignorant than anything - not evil like the WBC - where their stance seems to be genuinely based on religious beliefs rather than using them as a cover for bigotry. But that's just based on the little I've read.

My mother had eight siblings. I only have one, but he's in law school now and barely home. I don't find it that easy to make friends IRL and used to think it would be great if I had more siblings, because then I wouldn't have to deal with that awkward getting-to-know-people stage or everyone's clashing schedules in order to have people to hang out with.
