So, Nigel Farage
Re: So, Nigel Farage
And?
Is not really that different from white people can't dance jokes. Should we stop that too?
I am trying soooo hard not to get pissed off right now.

Yes. As a white person, who can't dance, I find it highly offensive. You racist.Dr_Liszt wrote:And?

Re: So, Nigel Farage
Whatever, not that big of deal I guess. But asking people not to make pointless jokes about something or someone is not the same as complaining about a valid critique of social injustice.
Re: So, Nigel Farage
No. You are wrong. Understand the context because contexts are everything.
French attitude just like white people can't dance don't have the same weight as rape jokes or racial jokes. Why? Because of oppression.
Oppression is what changes the context.

The French do have an attitude though. It's been cultivated to be of greatest inconvenience to anyone who can't speak French
Re: So, Nigel Farage
I really don't like it when people force me to agree with Liszt, so I'm just going to say I agree with her for different reasons. It's like supporting the right to keep and bear arms while recognizing that the NRA is just a shill organization for the gun manufacturers.

France rightfully belongs to Germany. They won it twice. Okay, they showed up at the border twice and the French said "Oh here, take it."

Re: So, Nigel Farage
When Mur first raised her objection to French jokes I was one of the first people to point out that jokes about the French are not the same as jokes about oppressed countries, and I said I agree with that in this thread. I'm not sure why you're pointing that out to me.
If someone was legitimately offended by me making jokes about white people not being able to dance, I wouldn't make jokes about it in their presence, because I think that's just the decent thing to do, and it has nothing to do social justice. I might still tell them that white people are the King Joffrey of race, because that's actually making a valid point, but saying white people can't dance doesn't make any point at all.

Technically, no one is making jokes about France in Mur's presence.

If you'd like to drop her a PM advising she avoid this thread, so as not to be offended, that would aid in her whole, y'know, not being offended by French jokes thing, whilst allowing us to continue being infantile about those cheese eating surrender monkeys

Meh, it's not that important to me. At least I got you bastards talking, and got a little bit of that controversy brewing that Brandon requested.
Re: So, Nigel Farage
Controversy where I agree with Liszt is not a good thing. But at least you gave her a chance to be right (sort of) for a change.

Re: So, Nigel Farage
Well maybe you shouldn't make offensive jokes about the French, then. Let everyone else do it since France is not oppressed, is not a beacon of untouchable lightness, is not anything. If for some reason people here start the policy that french jokes are untouchable, well, I'd just have to go and kill a kitten.BruceSmith78 wrote:When Mur first raised her objection to French jokes I was one of the first people to point out that jokes about the French are not the same as jokes about oppressed countries, and I said I agree with that in this thread. Liszt, imagine you're a white kid at a mostly black school, and you go to a dance. You're dancing with this guy you like and a crowd of people start laughing at you and making fun of you because you dance like a white person. Are they being racist? No. Are they being dicks? Yes. Do you have a right to feel hurt by what they're saying? Yes.
While I typed that I saw you posted again, so let me just clarify that I never asked anyone to stop making jokes about the French. I said it would be considerate to stop making pointless jokes about the French.

Meanwhile, we could talk about those lazy, mafia-loving, Vatican-supporting Italians. What good can come from a country that send geologists to jail for not being able to predict an earthquake? Oh, and they also caved to pressure by certain American interests and let a murderer go free just because she's a young woman. Damn, now I miss Malk.

Italy does kinda suck though. Like Greece, it's a bit of a laughing stock.
I miss the American guy from IMDb who reckoned he was Irish because his great, great, great grandfather came from Ireland. Then he got really defensive and claimed we were being racist by telling him he was American. Also, Giancarlo_carini. He took every loss Italy's soccer team had as a personal insult.

Bruce, in a polarized country like mine when you are at the top, you experience all kinds of resentment. No it doesn't make it right to be dicks, but French jokes are not a personal attacks to Mur. Or people ganging up to Mur.

Yeah, it was an overly dramatic example just to make my point. I'm sure Mur is not all that upset about French jokes, but it bothered her enough to mention it, and I was just suggesting people consider her feelings. That resulted in many more French jokes, so I obviously should have kept my mouth shut. Sorry Mur. Yeah but if we start mocking the Italians for being former Nazi's, we have to mock the Germans for it too. And I like Germany, and Germans.

I like the Germans too. You gotta give props to anyone who got their asses handed to them that badly in 1918, yet still came back for a second shot at the title.

Re: So, Nigel Farage
Let me just tweak my previous example so it doesn't involve personal attacks. Still overly dramatic in comparison to this board, but a more accurate analogy. Imagine you're a British kid in an American school, and in the hallway a bunch of kids around you start loudly carrying on about, "Man, I fucking hate how the British have those fucked up teeth, Queen-loving, buck-tooth having motherfuckers, so fucking nasty." They see you there and don't stop, and when you ask them to stop they just get more obnoxious about it. Are they dicks, or are they entirely justified?
