Aels, don't watch this
Aels, don't watch this
This is the worst thing ever. I know killing is wrong and everything, but can we make an exception for the guys that run this channel?
Re: Aels, don't watch this
I didn't click on this thread for a few moments because I thought it would involve spiders but I wanted to make the red 'You haven't read this' thing go away and I didn't know how. I haven't watched the video though, I can't take any more ninnies today.
WORDS IN THE HEART CANNOT BE TAKEN
Re: Aels, don't watch this
Well I'm glad you didn't avoid the thread completely; that wasn't my intent. But for future reference, there's a little "Mark topics read" link at the top of each forum; or a "mark all forums read" on the main page; which will get rid of the red.

I got as far as the biological imperative.
Re: Aels, don't watch this
I watched the whole thing and hated myself a little for it.
I remember when I first learned about the biological imperative thing. It's a neat fact that can help explain the reasons behind some of the things we see in our society. But this is the first time I heard it being used as an excuse for sexism and misogyny. I mean, it's like saying "see, there's a good reason why people murder other people. We have biological instincts that drive us towards violence. Trying to tell us to that we should change is just fighting against nature."

Yes, that's exactly what people say. It's also been used to justify rape, torture, racism, homophobia, meat-eating, exploitation, genocide, etc. All of these things are ok because biology.

Wait is DA a vegetarian? We haven't had a vegetarian debate on this board yet; there's something that can stir up some controversy.

It's a thing people use biology to justify, so no, it belongs.
Yeah, I'm a vegan.

Re: Aels, don't watch this
I don't think that's exactly how it works.. There are multiple lines of reasoning where we can arrive at the position that eating meat isn't immoral - adding to the mix that there is a biological basis for it doesn't detract from that. It's a thing people use biology to justify, so no, it belongs.
For this to fit in the same category of argument, you'd have to first agree that eating meat is a bad thing that is justified, spuriously by biology. I don't think the Biology is spurious and I don't agree that eating meat is immoral..

Yes, that is exactly how it works. It's an action people justify by pointing to our biology, so it belongs. I never said - or implied, or indicated, or suggested - that people didn't give alternative justifications/reasons for it. We don't even need to agree that eating meat is immoral for the point to work - the only point that was made was that it is justified using appeals to nature. Which it is. That was literally it.

Probably, but I get to piss off meat-eaters with it, so it's all worth it to me. ![yes [yes]](./images/smilies/yes.gif)

Meh I don't care. As long as I'm fed at my time and it tastes good, I'm good.

Me too. Basically. I don't think about it anymore. I've had all-vegan stuff for a few years and most of it is far tastier and healthier than most of the meat I had been having before. It's all automatic now.
I'm not nearly as militant as I was before about it but I still like annoying and offending meat-eaters.

Re: Aels, don't watch this
There are valid circumstances to bring biology into the mix when justifying certain things and incidences where being biology into an argument is invalid. I was drawing attention to the spurious nature of the argument not simply that biology can be used to validate certain behaviours.Derived Absurdity wrote:![]()

There isn't anything spurious about talking biology when it comes to discussing a source of nourishment if we don't first agree that eating meat is immoral.
Its hardly a case of pissing off meat eaters - I don't care what you eat or why. What I am drawing attention to here is the consistency of the argument as presented.
Re: Aels, don't watch this
I eat meat. I guess I'm psychopathic when it comes to cows, pigs, chicken and sea creatures. I'll burn in hell, but you know. Whatever. Tastes good.Derived Absurdity wrote:Me too. Basically. Annoy! Offend!
Re: Aels, don't watch this
But I agree with you though. It's immoral. But I can't help it, this is why I'm telling you I might be a psycho.
