Disney Fight #5: Controversies around sexual identity or lack thereof

Post by Unvoiced_Apollo »

As you are all aware, people love to make leaps in logic based on the slightest bit of evidence. A few of the vocal Christian fundamentalists got riled up because they thought Elsa symbolized lesbianism (or outright thought she was lesbian) because she was "in the closet" with her powers and didn't end up with dude. Of course, this is but one interpretation, with people from all sorts of backgrounds able to apply Elsa's plight with their own.

The reason I bring this up is because I saw The Little Mermaid recently (I know Brandon...supercalifragilisticexpialogay) and it got me thinking. There are elements in there where the same giant leaps in logic could translate to pro-transgender. You after all have a person transform their body in order to be happier. I myself am not equating that with transgender as that's pretty much where the similarities end & not everyone who is transgender goes through with the operation.

However, I could see a controversy over that based on the single element from the same group of aforementioned idiots. So...my question is, why wasn't there? Or was there and I just don't remember it? Perhaps the Internet and other developments (*cough*Fox News*cough*) as allowed a forum for these people and easy access to said forum. Do you think if The Little Mermaid were released today, there would be arguments against it for being pro-transgender?

I think the lack of an internet and Fox News would make it hard for crazy theories like "The Little Mermaid is brainwashing our kids to be transsexuals" to gain traction, but back then it was also far more acceptable to be openly homophobic and transphobic, so there wasn't much in the way of "those horrible libs running the Disney channel want to push their gay agenda down our throats and wage a war on good Christian values, etc."

Well, there was that whole issue when Lion King got accused of trying to encourage promiscuity in young people by hiding the word "sex" in the leaves. That gained some traction.

What you say about being openly homophobic seems counterintuitive. You'd think such conditions would increase the likelihood for crazy theories related to gender identity (considering the ignorant would equate transsexual with homosexual). I guess what you're saying the environment back then wasn't threatening enough to those that would complain today.

Yeah, when you can walk around and say homosexuals and transsexuals are gross and you're met with nothing but nods and agreement, you don't feel the need to concoct conspiracy theories about how you're "being oppressed by the gays".

Then I think we should go back to being openly homophobic. It's the only way to prevent these conspiracy theories of "being oppressed by teh gays" [none].

Well, I know of at least one trans kid's group called 'Mermaids'. Apparently lots of trans girls love Ariel, because her top half is clearly female and the bottom half is just a tail.

Also, there's Pinocchio and his obsession with becoming 'a real boy'. [none]

Just watched "The NIghtly Show." They used Pinocchio in a skit, relating it to Bruce Jenner.

Well it wasn't really equating. But Pinocchio does have experience transitioning. They specifically mentioned the "puppet to real boy" community or something like that.

Ohhh, okay. I thought Pinocchio was meant to represent Jenner, rather than transitioning in general.

I should have said that Jenner was a segue to Pinocchio discussing transition.
