Finally saw Man of Steel; I'm now a little less excited about Batman v Superman
It was so very "meh". Good action; good fights. But terrible story, dialog, characters, editing... the first half was like a bunch of random footage sloppily edited together. The pace of the movie just made no sense at all. Superman, Superman II, and most of Smallville were so much better.
I really disliked "300" as well, so it's probably a Snyder thing. Hopefully Batman v Superman will be different.

Completely agree with every word in your post. If someone told me I had typed the OP, I'd believe them.

I made a pledge to never watch anything by Snyder ever again after suffering through "Watchmen", so I wouldn't know but you're almost certainly correct.

Jonathan Kent's death was the most pointless part of that entire film. Also, pretty sure Superman has never actually killed anyone? Tbh, I kinda liked the film, but it wasn't great.

Yeah - I wasn't crazy about Man of Steel, but really didn't go in expecting much. I'm just not sure that I'm all that into Superman anymore which may explain some of the disenchantment - well that and it was a very uneven film that didn't make an enormous amount of sense.Gendo wrote:It was so very "meh". The Watchmen was absolutely bloody brilliant so, you're wrongI made a pledge to never watch anything by Snyder ever again after suffering through "Watchmen", so I wouldn't know but you're almost certainly correct.

In Superman II he kills Zod, and it's no big deal. In Man of Steel he kills Zod, and it becomes the most controversial thing ever. It's weird. But it is crazy how many people probably died due to the damage being done during the fights.Blade Azaezel wrote:Jonathan Kent's death was the most pointless part of that entire film. This is actually the only Superman movie I really ever liked.

Lots of people think that, and I never understood why.thesalmonofdoubt wrote:The Watchmen was absolutely bloody brilliant so, you're wrongI made a pledge to never watch anything by Snyder ever again after suffering through "Watchmen", so I wouldn't know but you're almost certainly correct.

Zack Snyder is the reason I have pretty low expectations of the whole DC attempt to do what Marvel have done. Snyder started off with a pretty good remake of Dawn of the Dead but has been going steadily downhill since then to the point where he is pretty much a watchword for directorial mediocrity, a hack attempting to impersonate Christopher Nolan. He's directing Batman vs Superman and is slated to direct Justice League 1 & 2...I think they've hitched their wagon to the wrong horse.
Re: Finally saw Man of Steel; I'm now a little less excited about Batman v Superman
I really liked Watchmen, loathed 300, and haven't seen Man of Steel. Which I suppose makes me neutral on Zack Snyder?

It was okay but Az is right about Johnathan Kent's death. That was the dumbest thing ever. He warned Clark to stay back...for what exactly? Because he doesn't want people discovering Clark's powers? He can move at near light speed. He could have saved his dad and been standing right beside his mother again without anybody even noticing him move.

It sucks if DC movies keep being mediocre since DC characters are infinitely better than Marvel characters.

I agree with everyone saying Snyder sucks, and DC fucked up by choosing him to direct all their major shit. I haven't seen Watchmen though. The previews never piqued my interest.

I really haven't seen that much of Snyders catalogue to comment all that meaningfully on his abilities.
What I have seen seems pretty uneven.
Dawn of the dead remake - all in all, pretty good but effectively just a more polished version of the original that didn't have the same nuance the original had but, was over all more enjoyable because it wasn't filmed as distractingly poorly as the original. I'm pretty sure most of the Kudos people give the original is due to the concept of the film more than its actual execution - which was just a step above 70's porn without all the smexy bits.
300 - Visually exciting for a bit then rapidly descended into visually repetitive. I actually don't think 300 was a terrible movie as much as just not as good as what everyone thought it was and so, gets an overdue amount of abuse from people as a kinda counter reaction to its popularity. It was by no means a terrific movie, it just wasn't as awful as people make out. It was what it was, an overly stylised remake of a graphic novel that repeated the same visual tropes way too many times.
Watchmen Was nothing short of absolutely brilliant. Visually fucking stunning. Set the right tone, recreated the universe richly and managed to maintain a seriousness while dealing with some pretty out there subject matter. Wasn't completely sure on a completely CGI Dr Manhattan .. but also wasn't distracted by it or its big blue dick, and love Billy Crudup which pretty much overcame any of my objections.
The only character that I really didn't like was Ozymandis who's entire styling, acting, direction came over too comic cheese for the balance of the cast.. Outstanding performances by Jeffrey Dean Stanton, Jackie Earle Haley and Malin Akerman.. What's not to like. Was hooked into this from the very first scene.
Man of steel Also not horrible but not very good. Looked great but definitely had more of a Goyer influence than something definitively Snyder. Overall this movie suffered from other movies of the same genre being much much better rather than this being awful. Too much time spent on the set-up, some distractingly stupid moments like his dads avoidable death with no convincing downside .. and just wasn't invested enuff in any of the characters to give a shit about how the battles resolved - which also seemed endless and in equal parts, pointless.
And that's pretty much all I've seen of Snyder's catalogue

I still don't like Watchmen, but I do think the opening credits are probably the best opening credits I've ever seen.

Well - we can agree on that .. Also really like the pre-credits scene, but the opening credits were amazingly dense, gave a good preview of the back events as well as set the whole thing up as being in an alternate universe.. Some amazing visuals .. also really liked the opening pan in towards the smiley face book ended by the closing Pan away ..
