I like it when the first world suddenly shows a light of common sense
Re: I like it when the first world suddenly shows a light of common sense
On the one hand, the environment. On the other hand, Nutella is so delicious that I would happily eat nothing else for the rest of my life nomnomnomnom.

Did you read past the first paragraph? She changed her stance almost immediately after learning that the leading company in the industry (supposedly) uses responsible sources, which I assume means those that replace what they harvest.

Yeah... but you are assuming there are responsible sources in the third world. And says that the U.S is more likely to raise demand. So no matter what we are always fucked.
Re: I like it when the first world suddenly shows a light of common sense
No, I made no such assumption. I simply did not say, assume, nor imply what you think I did. In any case, trees are replaceable, so responsible and sustainable harvest is possible. The question is whether it is practiced.

Nutella is apparently the wrong target, since Ferrero is apparently trying to use sustainable palm oil (if what they say is not just lip service).
Deforestation because of palm oil is a problem.
Maybe instead of boycotting products, it should be just made mandatory for each company to display what was used for their products.
This probably would not fit on a label; but in the times of smartphones and QR codes, this should not be an obstacle.
And then, let consumers make their own decisions.
As for me, I like Nutella; but I usually buy Chocoreale; a product that tastes as well as Nutella but uses organic sources.
Unfortunately, I can't say that meat replacement products like tofu are a suitable replacement for tasty steaks or sausages.

I don't know any solution to this except for bomb the whole world. Let cockroaches lead the planet.
Re: I like it when the first world suddenly shows a light of common sense
Yeah, we can't have people using those non-organic palm trees.a product that tastes as well as Nutella but uses organic sources

France will boycott or strike over anything. Just look at the Calais docks this week. Bloody French.
Re: I like it when the first world suddenly shows a light of common sense
I use France as an example on how to strike. ![none [none]](./images/smilies/none.gif)

The answer is simple: sustainable agriculture. Anything that uses trees and not just the fruit of the tree is going to take longer to replace, but everything agricultural is replaceable. Some things, like chickens, are just easier and faster to replace than others. Of course, if the world just returned to using hog fat this would never be a problem to begin with.

So a meaningless label.

Yeah... but that would require investment.

If lumber and paper companies can manage, so can palm oil companies. This company:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verso_Corporation
under previous ownership once managed hundreds of thousands of acres of forest in Tennessee and only harvested a small percentage each year. They have recently sold most of their holdings but, as far as I know, the sustainable harvest practices are still in place.
But the simplest solution is to go back to using hog fat, you can replace a hog a lot faster than you can replace a tree.

Ok. I'll start a campaign for hog fat.

I'm not a pigologist but I suspect it is fat from a hog.

^ Professional taster of all things pig here but no pigologist either .. but, yes, I would guess that Hog fat is fat that comes from a Hog as well.
For the purpose of illustration for non-native English speakers who may not know this - Hog = Pig.

It's lard, except I've always found that word unappealing for some reason.

Re: I like it when the first world suddenly shows a light of common sense
I already answered that. They are easily replaced. Of course the problem with going back to lard is that the breeds that were mainly lard-type breeds are almost extinct. I doubt there are over 200 lard-type hogs in the U.S. now and we probably have more than anybody. Most of those are owned by commercial outfits that are contracted to one of the few major companies that still produce lard.

So do the palm trees. Will no one think of the palm trees? ![mjeyds [mjeyds]](./images/smilies/mjeyds.gif)

In reality, I'm all for piggie slaughter as long as it's done in your borders instead of mine.
Re: I like it when the first world suddenly shows a light of common sense
Lard is the French word for bacon. But "Lardass" is used as an insult for people who are not underweight.
Common sense is another word for prejudice.
