Is this person on Reddit worth my time

Post by Anakin McFly »

https://www.reddit.com/r/SargonofAkkad/ ... s/dab5e3n/

(I'm the throwaway account because I deleted my main one to stay off Reddit but that obviously didn't work. [none])

tl;dr this person has a trans female co-worker who looks and acts like a manly dude but dresses kind of feminine and is named Jennifer. This person argues that he's known lots of men with female names, like Sue or Kelly, and that trans people are allegedly always arguing that you can't assume someone's gender based on their name or dress or else you're a racist bigot, and so he thinks it's unreasonable that she gets upset when people refer to her with male pronouns, or when HR allegdly fired someone for calling her a man, because how is anyone supposed to know?

tbh the only reason I've hung on so long is that I'm getting autistic vibes from him with his stubborn adherence to strict logic, difficulty grasping how probability and social interaction work and refusing to apologise for things that he says aren't his fault. I also empathize with the frustration when ambiguously-gendered people expect you to be psychic and get furious over innocent mistakes, and I dislike the expectation of using non-standard pronouns because they're grammatically difficult to incorporate into normal speech and wholly impractical in professional settings. But I've never encountered that IRL, just on Tumblr.

EDIT: nah, he's not worth it.

This though:

"I have been called cracker or whitey in an insulting way but they had no power because I didn't let them."

No... they had no power because they weren't being used by people who have power against people who do not have power.

Yeah, it's frustrating how often I see people make that argument. As someone else once responded, it must be tough to be reminded of the time when people like him owned slaves. The only way that could hurt would be in invoking guilt, but I doubt that's usually what happens for them.

It's also interesting how the same slurs have different power depending on the social context - anti-Chinese insults I hear in the US or Australia hurt pretty bad, but the very same words here from ethnic minorities railing at the Chinese majority are at most slightly annoying, because it's punching up rather than down.
