As far as Best Picture nominations go, I've only seen Get Out, Dunkirk, and The Post so far. Between those three I liked Get Out the best, but I still have the other six to see.

As usual, I haven't seen most things, since I generally only watch movies after I've been able to get them for cheap on DVD/blu-ray.
That being said, I've seen Get Out and Dunkirk for the big ones. Really looking forward to seeing Three Billboards.

I was pretty pleasantly surprised to see Logan for Adapted Screenplay.

What's with the 9 picks? Didn't they move from 5 to 10 a couple years ago? Why 9?

Yeah that's a good question. There were only nine last year IIRC though.Gendo wrote:What's with the 9 picks? Didn't they move from 5 to 10 a couple years ago? Why 9?

But now look at what you've done. So many posts of nerdy film talk that I necessarily have to go through...

Re: Oscars 2018 - March 3rd
So I thought the change was a couple years ago; but apparently it was actually 2009 when they moved to 10. And 10 is just an upper limit; not the actual number. Since 2009; most years have been 9, with a couple years being only 8, and only the first 2 years using all 10.

I've seen Three Billboards, Ladybird, and Get Out. Of those, I liked Three Billboards best. Four of those movies in Best Picture I'd never even heard of.

Re: Oscars 2018 - March 3rd
Out of all these I have seen Get Out, Baby Driver, GotG 2, and Kong. Lol. I don't go to the theater often.
I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing most of the movies in Best Picture, especially Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird (which I expect to like but not love), and Three Billboards (which had better be good). Anything directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and Guillermo del Toro is at least worth seeing (except Inherent Vice, that shit was boring af). Darkest Hour and The Post look like shit, and I heard Dunkirk is only really good in the theater, so I missed that one.

Re: Oscars 2018 - March 3rd
It's criminal that mother! wasn't nominated for either sound or editing, but then it was such a divisive movie I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
Re: Oscars 2018 - March 3rd
Sound Editing and Sound Mixing are different things. Sound Editing refers to actual effects work related to sound (Like gunshot sounds and so on) and Sound Mixing refers to how well the overall soundscape of a film is done. A film can be good at one and shit at the other.CashRules wrote: Um...okay then.
Interstellar for example had decent Sound Editing, but half of the time I couldn't hear the damn dialogue so I would say it had bad Sound Mixing.
Yeah that would have been nice, but oh well its the Academy.Faustus5 wrote:It's criminal that mother! wasn't nominated for either sound or editing, but then it was such a divisive movie I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
That it got Razzie nominations is complete bullshit though.
Yeah I thought it was PTA's worst film by far, though I've seen some people that like it.Derived Absurdity wrote:(except Inherent Vice, that shit was boring af)

I can see what Cash is saying about the same films getting the nominations. While there's certainly a difference, I don't think that many notice the distinction while watching films. It's like, technically there's a difference between lighting and everything else that goes into cinematography, but it all gets lumped together for the awards. I guess the reason sound gets two is because often different people handle each aspect.Raxivace wrote:Sound Editing and Sound Mixing are different things. I'm one that liked it. In a way I think it maybe my favorite PTA film and I can easily see it becoming a cult classic. I think it's the only film of his that's gotten better for me in retrospect.Raxivace wrote:Yeah I thought it was PTA's worst film by far, though I've seen some people that like it.Derived Absurdity wrote:(except Inherent Vice, that shit was boring af)

I guess I just don't see two related categories having the same nominees as very unusual or weird. ![giveup [giveup]](./images/smilies/giveup.gif)

I think the idea is: if they're going to have roughly the same noms, why not just make "sound" one category?Raxivace wrote:I guess I just don't see two related categories having the same nominees as very unusual or weird.

Shape of Water ended up getting Best Picture, and its neat seeing a kind of weird film like that winning. GDT mentioned Sirk being an influence on the film during one of his speeches, and having not picked up on that before I can see that now.
Oh and Deakins got an Oscar! Finally!
Otherwise seemed like a pretty straightforward year this year for the Oscars.

Re: Oscars 2018 - March 4th
I'm happy for Del Toro, and even if I end up liking one of the other BP noms better, I'm glad to see him getting recognized. I still feel on sheer cinematic talent, he's as good as anyone in Hollywood right now, and much better than many more acclaimed filmmakers.

Re: Oscars 2018 - March 4th
Yeah I dunno that Shape of Water was necessarily my favorite of the BP nominees (Get Out and Call Me By Your Name were also both quite good, and while ultimately I don't think I liked it I know a lot of others liked Phantom Thread a lot), but dammit but I can't help but love that a movie about one woman's epic quest to bang the Creature from the Black Lagoon got an Oscar.
I have to go through Del Toro's earlier work at some point. I'm only really familiar with his recent English language films plus the awesome mini video game he made with Hideo Kojima. Shame we'll never see the Silent Hill game that that project was leading to.
