Movies I partook in watching
Movies I partook in watching
Haven't posted a list in a while... still going through my collection, trying to watch all the movies I own but have never seen. In the order that I happen to think of them:
For Love of the Game - Great movie. I like pretty much all Raimi, and it's interesting to see something that's so very different from anything else he's done. Good baseball movie; good romantic movie.
King Ralph - So the only reason I own this is that the only way to get Pure Luck on DVD is to buy one of those 4-film collection things, which I really dislike. But oh well. Anyway, I pretty much always like John Goodman, but the film was about as bad as I was expecting. Actually I realized that The Princess Diaries is the exact same movie. So is Mr. Deeds.
For Richer or Poorer - Also in the same 4-film set. Not bad; some decent jokes. Not exactly worth watching though.
Date Movie - I don't think I ever cracked a smile the whole time. Not AS bad as Epic Movie, but that's really not saying much. Terrible.
There Will Be Blood - This one had been really hyped up. It almost lived up. I'd forgotten about the whole Paul Thomas Anderson thing, so I wasn't prepared for a... unique/weird experience. But Daniel Day Lewis was fantastic of course.
Here on Earth - Pretty much crap. It's like the exact same movie as A Walk to Remember, except that I actually really like A Walk to Remember. The entire romance is so confusing and fake... boy meets girl who has a boyfriend and tries to flirt with her. She isn't amused. Then that boy and the girl's boyfriend get into a big fight which results in the girl's family's restaurant being completely destroyed. Next time girl sees boy, she's flirting with him and totally in love with him. Um, what??
Moneyball - Great movie.
The Pagemaster - Not bad. Probably one of those movies you need to have seen as a kid to appreciate. Kind of like a worse version of Neverending Story.
The Delivery Man - I don't own this one; I saw it on a plane a few months ago. But I really liked it; would add to my collection.
The Wolf of Wall Street - Very typical Scorsese movie; but good. I liked it better than Casino (it's extremely similar).
American Hustle - Not bad.
Warm Bodies - Not as good as I'd hoped, but still good. I guess the story was just a little to basic, even though it was a really unique concept.
Little Miss Sunshine - Great, great movie. Very dark, very funny.
Well, about 343 movies to go. Several of those are part of a set where I've seen some movies but not all in the set; so it's actually less than that. And 50 of them are in this "50 movie collection" thing with a bunch of old, and probably mostly terrible, musicals.

Re: Movies I partook in watching
I never got the appeal of the "scary movie" "date movie" genre.... I watched "not another teen movie" and found it well.... digusting. Never watched the others.
Re: Movies I partook in watching
Yeah, Not Another Teen Movie is another one that I own for some reason even though it's terrible. But I DO like Scary Movie. And heck, even movies like Spaceballs and Robin Hood Men in Tights are technically the same genre. It's just that those were done extremely well.Islandmur wrote:I never got the appeal of the "scary movie" "date movie" genre.... I watched "not another teen movie" and found it well.... digusting. Re: Movies I partook in watching
Oh I like spaceballs and men in tights... spoofs... I don't think they are in the same league as the "x movie" genre though. The couple that I have seen haven't made an impression on me. Maybe I should try the "scary movie".
Re: Movies I partook in watching
Right... same basic genre/idea, but completely different leagues. I'm not saying Scary Movie is at all in the Mel Brooks league. Probably closer to Epic Movie than Spaceballs... but still good enough that I liked it. Also, I believe it was the first of those movies; which makes sense why it would be the best. You have to like Scream and horror movies in general to like it, I think.
Re: Movies I partook in watching
Never seen scream but I do like horror, I just don't like gore. lol quite a contradiction since nowadays horror movies feature a lot of gore.

Re: Movies I partook in watching
There's quite a lot of good horror movies recently without gore. The Babadook, It Follows, etc. You just need to look in the right places.
Re: Movies I partook in watching
I saw Harry Potter and the Woman in Black. It's a good scary movie.
I didn't find it all that scary but it was entertaining.

Re: Movies I partook in watching
You want only recent ones, or non-gory horror movies in general?
Recently there's those two (very good), and then there's also Pontypool (pretty good), Resolution (... interesting), The Conjuring (pretty generic, I thought, but maybe good for someone who scares easily), The Woman in Black (pretty good), Cabin in the Woods (a spoof thing), Let The Right One In (really really good, one of my favorite movies ever), The Descent (not really recent, and I think there might be some gore but not very much, it's still very good), The Orphan (it didn't get very good reviews but I liked it, there's some moments of violence but not much gore), The Host (really fun mash-up of a whole bunch of different genres), Under the Skin (it's certainly creepy and disturbing), May (not recent, but very good and very sad), Cache (I don't remember much of it but it doesn't have much gore and I think I liked it)... that's all I can think of right now.
I mean, if you don't want recent ones there's a gargantuan list of those. I may have missed some recent ones that were worth mentioning too.

Actually I think The Descent has quite a lot of gore, now that I think about it. So, uh, scratch that one.
(It's been a while since I've seen it)

Re: Movies I partook in watching
The Ring and The Grudge don't have much gore, that I can recall. I've never seen the original versions but I'd imagine they would be better. Originals usually are.
Re: Movies I partook in watching
I think I've seen part of the ring didn't like it much... I might give it another try

Re: Movies I partook in watching
Do not ever, ever, ever watch The Grudge remake. It is the most boring movie I have ever seen. I have tried to watch it four times at least, and I've fallen asleep every single time. In fact I bought it a while ago for the sole purpose of helping when I'm having trouble going to sleep. So far it has a 100% success rate.
I don't remember any gore at the end of Cabin in the Woods but there might be.

Re: Movies I partook in watching
It's not Saw level but still pretty graphic.
Insidious is a good one Mur. Very atmospheric.
Any exorcism flick is good too

I was also gonna warn about gore in Cabin in the Woods. It's a good flick though.

Oh yeah, Insidious is pretty good.
I still don't remember any gore in Cabin in the Woods. Where is it?
In fact I don't remember most anything in Cabin in the Woods. I just remember it as some silly inoffensive parody.

Re: Movies I partook in watching
Oh yeah...A young woman is stabbed through the hand and blood splatters. She then has a metal mantrap thrown into her back and is dragged away and it's implied her head is cut off. Her decapitated head is later thrown at her friend and she screams in horror and throws it.

Um...
Nevermind.
Re: Movies I partook in watching
Ok I've seen insidious and I found it boring... Watched it with my then 17 year old goddaughter and we were very disappointed are there two insidious movies?
Re: Movies I partook in watching
Theres a sequel but I haven't seen it. If you found it boring that's disappointing.
I thought it was very well done atmospherically. If you want a horror movie without gore the go-to is atmosphere...but if you found that boring Im not sure what you'd like.
Have you seen Rosemarys Baby or the original Omen?

Re: Movies I partook in watching
I enjoyed Pagemaster as a kid, but never thought it quite stacked up to other animated films of its era. I saw King Ralph as a kid and actually liked it, but I probably wouldn't care for it these days despite Goodman.
Spaceballs probably remains my favorite spoof movie, largely because of my nerdiness. I also like Young Frankenstein a lot. Really don't like Men in Tights though. Also good: Airplane, Austin Powers, and Naked Gun.

I've not see halloween though, I've seen the jason / and nightmares and maybe it's because I only saw them 3 years ago, I wasn't impressed. Is halloween better?
Re: Movies I partook in watching
Halloween is far less blood and guts and far more atmosphere and suspense.
