Black is Beautiful

There's this squirrel that lives near the building where I work. Its fur is completely black and it seems to shine. It's a very pretty animal.

I saw something in the news a few years back about how red squirrels have been largely beaten down by grey squirrels in the UK and now black squirrels are giving grey squirrels a kicking.

In Germany I see more and more dark brown squirrels. Years ago red squirrels were more common.
I've never seen grey squirrels in real life yet.

Maybe the different squirrel types are interbreeding, and the survivors get the best of each. Evolution at work.
Or maybe I am just not very observant.

The Eastern Grey Squirrel from the U.S. and Canada was imported to Europe years ago and has just about drove the native European red squirrel to extinction in some places. All the colors mentioned; gray, black, brown; are eastern gray squirrels. Brown is just how they look at times and black is a color morph. Every college campus I've ever seen has its own population of white squirrels that are also eastern gray squirrels. They don't last long in the wild but the white gene can soon take over in a protected environment. In the wild I've seen exactly two white squirrels in my entire 40+ years of squirrel hunting. Come on people, learn science and stuff.
