Just to show that there's dumb arguments on all sides

Post by Gendo »

Obviously the vast majority of stupid arguments I've seen in the past week have been against gay marriage. But sometimes even the other side doesn't quite think right. So some conservative posted one of those images about how the rainbow is actually God's symbol, and about it's meaning in the Bible vs the meaning used by LGBT.

Anyway, a gay marriage supporter replied with "Seriously!?!?!? This has been the symbol for LGBT for years and now you're choosing to claim that it's god's?? Just because gay rights are finally happening."

Um, yeah gay rights may be a good thing and all, but I'm relatively sure that Christians have believed that the rainbow is a sign from God for hundreds of years before the LGBT movement was using it.

The rainbow has been symbolic for many things for centuries, but there's no denying that in this country the rainbow currently predominately symbolizes LGBT-related things. So, historical evolution and all that. What that poster should have said was more like, "Yeah, OK, well now the rainbow is ours. Deal with it."
The agonies which are have their origin in the ecstasies which might have been.

I think there is a point to be made about the rainbow and how it's adoption by LGBT activists has had an interesting affect on Christians. During my younger days within Catholicism the rainbow featured little within CCD/Mass/Confirmation. I recall it being mentioned only once during Mass when scripture was being read.

The rainbow was not commonly used in the catechism of the church and I think there is well spread ignorance about it's symbolism within Christianity in any denominations so your above scoff loses a bit of power when this is all taken into consideration.

I find it interesting to see those Facebook posts from Christians with some kind of rainbow meme and how it belongs to God because it's just one more "small" thing they are harping about instead of the more important issues in life. I mean, homosexuality is mentioned how many times in the bible? And the rainbow was rarely referred to or discussed except during scripture readings within a majority Christian sect. And yet homosexuality and rainbows figure prominently in their protests. I just find it amusing.
