Flicks I seen: The Martian

Post by Monk »

I managed to catch an early screening last night. I have to say that this is probably the best thing either Ridley Scott or Matt Damon has done in years (at least a decade for Scott). Given the premise of the film, you'd expect it to be mostly a downer with the main character going through an existential crisis throughout. Instead, the film is surprisingly light-hearted and funny, and Matt Damon plays a rather down-to-earth (somewhat "bro-like") who manages to find humor in the challenges he faces.

The science portrayed in the film is largely believable until the final act, where it borders typical Hollywood ridiculous but manages to be entertaining enough that you can manage to forgive. As you'd expect, there are many tense moments that were really well done, and both my lady and I were clenching our fists. On the negative side, some of the side characters a bit two-dimensional, and the final pre-credit scene was relatively underwhelming compared to the rest of the film. I don't think the film will have much of an impact in the long term nor be considered a classic. Regardless, I highly recommend it!

Which is better, Martian or Interstellar?

And how the heck do people find out about early screenings?

Never actually saw Interstellar. Pre-screening was some sort of deal my lady's university had going on, and she managed to grab some tickets.

I was asking jokingly as Matt Damon & Jessica Chastain are both in Interstellar & The Martian.

And Matt Damon's character is in the exact same situation in both...
