It was a really good movie.
And Jake deserved the Oscar nomination. I told Michael this was the male version of Gone Girl except this was actually well made.

I wouldn't say I have anything against it... it's just completely unnecessary for me. I have over 1700 movies in my DVD collection, at least 300 of which I haven't seen yet. If there's a movie I really want to see that I don't own, I'll buy it; for less than what I would otherwise be paying Netflix each month.OpiateOfTheMasses wrote:I'll bite - what have you got against Netflix?Gendo wrote:I own it. I also own this movie, along with thousands of others, but a lot of people access entertainment through means like Netflix (myself included), so I thought I'd reach a wider audience by channeling it through Netflix than telling people to go buy it.

You're a DVD collector too? I may have known this and forgot. Do you have a catalog or something?
Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
I do not have an inventory of them all written down or anything. The most exhaustive thing like that is the content of all those "Best of decades" threads I made a while back. Those titles are probably like a quarter of everything.

Also, the monthly cost is less than buying a DVD and there's no storage issues. Seems like a win-win to me.

The main issue is it takes so damn long for Netflix to get movies (& tv shows for thst matter) on its stream that I'd consider watching that to pay their subscripton fees isn't really worth it when I could just get the blu-rays for effectively less cost yearly. And I have a guarantee that I will have access to it and it won't disappear from my bookshelf (unlike Netflix's stream, which drops movies from it).OpiateOfTheMasses wrote: Fair enough. I suppose this also goes back to one of the previous comments about re-watching films. There are only a handful of films (or for that matter TV series) that I will re-watch - the way I see it there is so much out there (I have pretty varied tastes) and I have pretty limited time so I'd rather watch something new when I do have time to sit and watch something.Unvoiced_Apollo wrote:The main issue is it takes so damn long for Netflix to get movies (& tv shows for thst matter) on its stream that I'd consider watching that to pay their subscripton fees isn't really worth it when I could just get the blu-rays for effectively less cost yearly. As well as Netflix we have Sky (I'm not sure how prevalent that is in the US) so between the two of them I will pretty much always find something that I want to watch.

I've never heard of Sky. And to me, Netflix is very limited in its selection of movies & TV shows that I would consider watching. I'd rather have a hard copy I know I can rewatch rather than depend on a service that is bound to drop it before I decide to watch it. And by the time Netflix gets something on its stream besides it's own tv shows, the movie/tv show is well beyond any interest I might have because there are newer tv shows & movies I want to seeOpiateOfTheMasses wrote:I suppose this also goes back to one of the previous comments about re-watching films. As a collector, storage isn't in itself a downside; it's just a built-in part of collecting anything. But man, we are struggling with storage now. After shelving the latest round of purchases, my shelves in the theater are completely maxed out. We have separate floating shelves to hold the larger box sets and such; and those are maxed out too. And this isn't including the fact that DS9 and all the Lord of the Rings boxes aren't actually on the shelves. We don't really have any wall space in that room either.

Sky is mainly a satellite TV service that's very big in lots of parts of the world. As well as all the stuff the broadcast they do a lot of On Demand services too through a broadband connection. It's a big part of Murdoch's empire. It's also the only place you can get a lot of the bigger US shows like Game of Thrones shown on now in the UK unless you wait for the DVDs to be sold.Unvoiced_Apollo wrote:I've never heard of Sky. Given the amount of times we move, I just can't be doing with it, so if there's away to get rid of stuff or not accumulate it in the first place I jump at it.
But after living with 'er indoors for as long as I have I understand that each to their own and if it makes you happy to collect them, then who am I to judge?

Gone Girl was a good flick, and Apocalypse Now sucked. What the fuck was Marlin Brando saying? He needed subtitles.
Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
Aside from it being probably the greatest movie ever made, I agree that Brando's role could have been done much better. There was a lot of potential there, but a lot of off-screen conflicts (mainly Brando being a little bitch diva) made it fall a bit short.BruceSmith78 wrote:Apocalypse Now sucked. Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
I tried watching the greatest movie ever made years ago. I even had it on DVD, before my house got burglarized by a coke-head, but I really didn't get it.
They spent all this time sending Martin Sheen into the jungle, where a lot of weird and random shit happens, which mostly just bored me, and then he finally meets this mysterious badass he's supposed to kill or something, this guy they've been hyping up the whole movie, and he turns out to just be a flake you can't understand. I swear to God, I did not understand one word that motherfucker said, and I turned the fucking thing off in disgust. Didn't even finish it.
Seriously, what the fuck was Marlin Brando saying?

Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
He was mostly rambling nonsense. That's the point. He had created this illusion around himself that made the native inhabitants worship him like a god, and then some unsuspecting westerners, too. I think the idea is that all the crazy shit you experience on your way to Brando's compound, which is super deep into the jungle, makes you go pretty much fully insane so when you finally get there your mind is so far gone that you're susceptible to Brando's brand of insanity and fall victim to it. Martin Sheen's will was strong enough not to fall for Brando's tricks (even though he kind of did).
Brando's character is extremely complex. Summing all that shit up here is hard to do. Basically he got disillusioned from the military and decided to go rogue and carry out missions on his own. He was accused of murder so he hid out in Cambodia. The things he was saying were mostly jibberish and quoting poetry (T.S. Eliot, to be precise), but when he got to talking to Martin Sheen seriously and soberly he essentially told him that he was tired of all the bullshit and wanted to die. But he couldn't simply kill himself because he was so vain and wanted his legacy to be carried on. So he made Martin Sheen promise to go tell his story to his wife and child back in the U.S. before killing him.
He's a teenager with a lot of misdirected angst who really likes T.S. Eliot.![none [none]](./images/smilies/none.gif)
Anyway, this movie is a stylized version of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Brando's Kurtz and Conrad's Kurtz are basically the same character, except in the book the mission is to rescue the guy, not kill him (though, in a way, killing Brando is rescuing him, perhaps the only way). So, maybe give yourself the chance to read the book if you want to understand Brando's character better. It's a good read, anyway.

Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
The documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102015/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) is also quite illuminating. As I recall, they were very keen to get Brando in the film but when he turned up he was essentially and permanently wasted (as did Sheen for that matter) and had loads of stipulations as to how he could be shown on camera. But so keen were they to have the "big name" that they did there best to work round them to keep him happy.
I do agree that the Director's Cut does go on a bit too much in particularly random and unnecessary tangents - the whole tangent to the French colonial plantation really deserved to stay on the cutting room floor.

Saw it, and was disappointed that it didn't go as far as it could have. I was expecting the guy to eventually start orchestrating his own serial killing sprees to photograph, but nope.
Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
Well, he kind of did. He moved that one body from the car wreck to get a better shot. Then he had Rick killed to get a good shot. And he basically caused the deaths of all those cops in the diner, the second burglar guy, and whatever cops died in the chase. That was all his doing. Oh yeah! And he said that there was an alive person in the Murder House, but he cut that part out. That person probably died. He killed like ten people!

Yeah, but that was just working with what was available and making it worse, not any actual plotting and creating new crimes out of nothing.
Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
Sorry to nitpick, but he did totally orchestrate Loder's death (he cut the brakes on his van) as well as Rick's (telling him the guy was dead). And one could argue he orchestrated the deaths of the cops in the diner shootout and the subsequent chase, but that's more reaching and less direct.

Re: Guys, you guys, do yourselves a favor
Okay, so I just watched this. It's on Netflix, who knew? It wasn't the biggest disappointment of my life but it definitely doesn't live up to the hype. I'd give it a generous 6/10 but someone would have to pay me good money to watch it again. But at least this thread has some entertainment value with someone providing an example of a situation where capitalism has completely crumbled (along with practically all of society) as an example of the evils of capitalism. Yeah, and someone breaking into my house and cracking my safe and stealing my money is an example of the evils of money. Hey, don't blame me, I'm not the one who decided to go off on some ridiculously bullshit tangent on a thread about one specific movie.

Sorry for going off on a tangent which was directly related to the subject of the thread.
